Awesome drive!

Amazing drive through some wonderful scenery. Steep hairpin bends are just a part of this drive. Soria is a pleasant small village with a small cafe/restaurant . Worth a walk down to the damn which is an impressive piece of engineering .
Definitely worth adding to your hire car itinerary .

The drive to the reservoir is a little hair raising but its worth the journey. If you walk down to the reservoir itself and cross over the top of it there is a walk up into the hills on the other side. It was hot and sweaty in the sunshine (take some water) but well worth the stunning views at the top and a sit down in the shade of the hills. Walk back down and eat at the restaurant and drink lots of peach and mango juice!!

The driving is the challenge

The water reservoir is impressive on a map, but when you get there you will not find more than a bit of brownish water.... the reservoir is empty due to lack of rain in the past year(s). The drive there is nerve wrecking. You need a strong stomach to deal with all the hairpins, steep climbs and endless kilometers of mountain roads without side protection. Pretty scary if you are not used to it. It was an interesting trip in the end but more for the driving than for the water reservoir

Ok if you like a driving challenge but nothing when you get there

The most spectacular thing about a visit to Soria is the 25 km of winding roads full of hairpin bends and blind corners. Anyone enjoying that type of drive would enjoy this.

Look at a map, and you get the impression you would visit a large water filled reservoir with spectacular views. In the summer, The reality is that you see a large dam with grafiti on it and a very very small pond of water quite some distance down from the road. There is also no easy access to the dam.

Soria does have one restaurant/ cafe but blink and you miss it. Carry on driving and you reach a non descript end of the road which allows you to turn around and drive back.

I would not place this on any to do list I would give to people unless they enjoy the challenge of trying to get an underpowered hire car ( and they are all small engines) around a hairpin bend on an 1 in 8 hill.

Soria was recommended to us by the hotel staff, as a wild and unspoiled place with a lovely views and incredible lakes located in the canyons on the way to volcano. We were told we could expect a narrow mountain road with plenty hard turns and cliffs as high as hundred meters down. Road leading to Soria starts in the town of Arguineguin and it is called GC-505, which is located next to the ocean shore. Shortly after the road begins, surrounding is changing radically and you will find yourself traveling on the bottom of the colourful valley. And yet again another surprise comes shortly after when you and your "small rented car" will start to climb up along serpentines of narrow road just few steps from cliff leading straight to the bottom. Trip could be scary but views are astonishing especially on the sunny days and there is a reward on arrival to Soria -The lake and the Dam. You start to realize that the valley you just drove should be underwater and this dam is holding all the water from it. Views are something unforgettable and truly amazing. Road by itself is very popular with cyclists and you could pass them on the way up or be surprisingly be passed on the way down. On the top of the road in a village of Soria, small restaurant called "Casa Fernando" is located, offering food and drinks to visitors and it is always full with resting cyclists. Worth to travel there and spend some quiet and relaxing time.
