- Lorenzo MManacor, Spain184 contributionsWe went to see if we found fresh fish, and we really found a lot of fish from the auction fresh and very cheap. All excellently exposed. There is also a lot of meat, fruit and cold cuts.Visited November 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 21, 2024
- Elizabeth PDurham, United Kingdom85 contributionsProbably our favourite stop in Palma! We pulled chairs up at mercat negre stall and were served about 5 dishes each of fresh fish with gorgeous wine, all paired with amazing service and atmosphere. Such a bargain as well - it was roughly €35 each (in the UK this would easily be £80 each!!!)Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 25, 2024
- RitsParis, France108 contributionsA nice Point of Sale full of good products that smell good. We had lunch there, it was not bad but not crazy, the tapas lacked flavor. Overall it is nice to spend but everything is very expensive, express meal on the go for 3 for 70€, expensive for Spain and above all it was not incredible. My mom bought a beach dress a few hours before and we found the same one at the Point of Sale at triple the Award... Do not generalize but compare before.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 9, 2024
- teoserriCagliari, Italy136 contributionsWhat to say? The market always has its charm and they know it! Frequented also and above all by local people, it loses a bit of tradition in the cooking areas. Fascinating experience, but typical tourist tapas bar situation found in any city in Spain. A bit touristy, but it couldn't survive if it weren't like this! Average quality, not for refined palates but for people who want to live a tourist experience in a fascinating place!Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 4, 2024
- juliev26Lille, France317 contributionsNice to do if you go to Palma. We find fresh fish as well as cold meats, tapas, seafood... but also groceries, various and varied souvenirs... possibility to have a drink and eat a bit on site, it was tempting but it did not seem appropriate with 2 young children. I would have done some shopping, but I was flying a few hours later. I enjoyed the atmosphere and mix tourists / locals.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 2, 2024
- ChrisK3West Yorkshire, United Kingdom1,217 contributionsVisited the market many years ago, this time around it seemed a little different with a supermarket upstairs and lots of tapas stalls selling a wide range of food including sushi and Dim Sum along with the regular Spanish dishes. Still well worth a visit and I think the food stalls add to the enjoyment of a visit. The supermarket upstairs also offered some good bargins, I found a great deal on Tanqueray gin. All areas were spotlessly clean.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 15, 2024
- Matthew PLondon, United Kingdom6,308 contributionsA covered or better described purpose built. The stalls are organised and the colours of the fruit amazing, fresh fish, and butchers. Some places have seats to eat, we bought a take away and sat out side, people watching at it's best.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2024
- cesarazpPalma de Mallorca, Spain349 contributionsPalma's central market that partly continues to function as a market, although less and less. Many stalls, like other markets on the peninsula, have been transformed into tapas, crusts or food stalls. - MartinGLeeds, United Kingdom104 contributionsThis is a fantastic market. Really clean and with great stalls covering everything you could want. - T. ThiruBerlin, Germany741 contributionsGreat market in the middle of Palma. The fish market was our favorite. We had a really good time. The products were very fresh and tasty. We ate a little something at almost every stall and everything was perfect. The prices were moderate. But we have to highlight one thing: "purozushi." We have never eaten better sushi.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 11, 2024

Covered market in Palma, we wanted to have a snack at lunchtime and we succeeded very well at the Ván Aleixandre counter, platter with excellent ham, cheese and croutons, 2 medium beers on tap (EXCELLENT Spanish beer, ask for advice) served by the glass frozen 22 euros. I had picked up some excellent figs at a fruit and vegetable stand and we had a really tasty snack (standing). However, inside the market there are also solutions where you can sit, including a restaurant. It's crowded because there are a lot of locals, but for me it was worth the stop.

We enjoyed browsing the amazing produce but when it got to lunchtime we struggled to find something that we could eat there in the market. Some stalls have a few seats or little bars, but all were taken by about noon. The overpowering smell of fish from the fish stalls was also quite off-putting so we bought some takeaway food and ate it on a bench in the children's playground outside. The market is also one of just three places we saw in Palma that had public toilets (the others were the car park under the Parc de la Mar and the Mercato de Santa Catalina, a smaller market in the West of the city which we preferred).

The Mercat de l'Olivar is the largest and most popular market hall in Palma. It is located in the historic city center and is just a 2-minute walk from Plaza España. All kinds of delicacies are on offer here - from fruit and vegetables to fresh fish and seafood to ham, sausage and cheese specialties. We ended the tour with a drink and a few tapas in the "Bar Peix". Delicious!

Last visited here in 2012, when staying in Cala D'Or, and had the most wonderful & inexpensive Tapas meal ever This time we were in Alcudia and caught the bus into Palme for a day out, making sure that one of our first stops was at this wonderful Market, which is only a short walk from the main train/bus interchange at Placa Espana. We were not disappointed. The place has had quite a makeover since we were last here, but lost none of its charm or atmosphere. The displays of Seafood, Fruit & Veg, etc, on its stalls are second to none, and many of the numerous eateries have gone quite upmarket. We even found the same place we eat last time we were here, Bar del Peix and once again had a lovely Tapas lunch, which cost us just short of 12E, with drinks. It's just a great place to walk round, look at the wonderful displays, people watch & soak in the atmosphere. A visit to Palma, without a call into this Market is a day unfulfilled. Don't miss it

You might not buy anything but it is worth a stroll to peruse the varied stalls. Listening carefully it is filled with locals so has the feel of a genuine market. The fish stalls are a sight to behold. Fish I could not name, oysters, lobsters and mussels. If you were self catering you’d be spoilt for choice. The fruit and veg stalls always look so fresh and on a different level to the uk. There are some touristy stalls, fridge magnets etc. If you want one of those buy it from the bag sellers in the harbour for €1.50. Cheapest I saw in Palma! This place is worth a visit as you wander in to the old town.

On the place with the same name, the now 70 years old Mercat de l'Olivar (olive grove) with over 100 stalls is considered to be the biggest covered market in Mallorca. It can be found near Plaza España with the Estacion Intermodal, but is also quite close to the Plaza Mayor. Renewed several times since its first opening it is an airy and clean place full of light.
The choice of anything edible is enormous, be it vegetables, fruits, meat, cheese, breads or spices. For obvious reasons the fish and seafood gets sold in a separate hall, very big too. In between there are tapas bars. On the way to the 'primera planta' with the supermarket 'Mercadona' are toilets.
What especially intrigued me here was the discovery of a vegetable I had never seen before, a 'Zucchiolo'. To buy it I first had to get a ticket with a number. This is the case at most busy stalls. Back home I had my wife prepare this completely round vegetable after we read about it in the internet. Apparently it was developed in Almeria and is only on the markets since last November, thus less than a month ago.
It can be eaten raw and cooked and for me it was like a mixture between a zucchini and a cucumber. It comes in three colors: dark green, light green and yellow.

I have to admit, I liked the market, but the behavior of one of the vendors took away a lot from the experience when she started talking to us in a peasant way because the child was holding a wrapped fruit that we wanted to buy. She started teaching us about child rearing and behavior just because (again) the child grabbed a wrapped piece of fruit because we wanted to buy it. Luckily, we managed to keep our cool and our good manners, we apologized from the "lady"and asked the child to put the fruit back and after the apology we told the lady that we have no intention of shopping here anymore. The lesson of the case is that, besides the fact that the market is good, jerks are unfortunately everywhere.

If you are in Palma for the first time take an hour and stop looking at old stones, churches, convents ( as lovely as they are) get away from the tourist trap Tapas bars and amble over to a real working urban market. The bounty of the farm and the sea and the splendors of balesric cuisine are all here. Make your own, fresh, delicate, and much more affordable tapas choices right from the vendors! Relish in the mountains of fresh balearic seafood! If you want sit down with the locals and enjoy croquettes, skewers, and a myriad of seafood tapas or if you like REALLY fresh sushi!
No need to go upstairs ( shops and standard supermarket) unless you are in a B&B and need to stock up on staples.

Large and busy market full of stalls selling, fish, fruit, meat and local specialities. It’s particularly interesting around 3 pm on Friday when the stall holders close up and gather around the tapas bars. It’s a rather unique buzz.

Gorgeous displays of fresh food in one big, central indoor market - nothing like we have in the UK !
Mar 2023 • Couples
Very large central market, with all the typical wonderful fresh displays of fish, fruit, vegetables, cheese, nuts and other foods. Several tapas bars inside too. The building itself isn't beautiful - more practical. (Not as good or beautiful as Valencia's central market). Not too busy in March but can imagine it gets crowded in high season. Another large market we visited in the Santa Catalina area of Palma was just as good.

Hi I’m in Palma for my birthday on Wednesday 22nd August.. I love markets !! But is this one only a fish market ? Or is there other kind of local products sold etc cakes/pastry’s/clothing items/gifts ...
Thankyou Georgia :)

Hi Georgia,
There are cakes, pastry and sweet in the main food market not clothes. There are a couple of shops in downtown selling gifts in good price too. Clothes shops are more or less the same brand as in the UK, some cheaper Chinese shops in town may have some cheaper beach wearers. Have a great time in Palma. 😊 Maggie

Hi Georgia, the market has everything. Fish, meat, vegetables, fruit, sweets, confectionery, pastries (try the Ensaimada!) and several Tapas bars. I don't remember any shops selling clothing, though. You could buy presents in some of the deli type shops.
