- Paul RFrankfurt, Germany36 contributionsBuy and then have your fish cookedGreat market. Here you can buy fresh fish and then take it to a special stand where it will be cooked for you. Freshest fish I ever ate. very reasonable prices and very friendly folks selling and cooking the fish. We will return.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 5, 2023
- Hazel KWilmslow, United Kingdom90 contributionsAbsolute hitLoved this market over and above the main Olivar market. It just felt more authentic and a bit rough around the edges. Plenty to see and experience in there and a good selection of places selling drinks and racions (portions) of superfresh produce and goods. Go here and get a taste of real Palma.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2023

Food is fresh and tasty. Staff is great. Portion size is fair enough and so it is price. The only "minus" goes to lack of sitting spaces adjacent to locals but it is the charm of place.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 25, 2024

Excellent fish dish at counter Somewhat spoiled by a very poor pasteleria de molin round the corner. Way to expensive and much to sweet. - Diana P2 contributionsTop quality food and drinkThis market was recommended for us to visit if we wanted to get a real taste of Majorca. It is fantastic, fruit, cheese, meats, wines all fresh, all available to taste before you buy, but this can be dangerous, as we ate so much ! The fresh sushi, made right in front of us was so good, great value too. What a wonderful market, how lucky to live here and shop anytime you wanted.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 25, 2024
- T BYork, United Kingdom1,361 contributionsQuality produce, neighbourhood marketFound this by chance on a stroll into Palma centre from the hotel. You’d miss it if you’re not looking for it, tucked away on side streets in a residential neighbourhood between the main thoroughfares into the centre. The produce is quality, designed for the families and friends of the stall owners, so only the best. So, why not sample some of the produce, lovingly made and sit amongst locals as you sample Mallorcan classsics such as Frit (with liver) and Tumbet for the veggies. Tip: find the stall that does their boquerones with garlic…sublime!Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 25, 2024

An oasis in the small and busy quarter of Santa Catalina. Fresh produces from the sea and the land displayed with passion and friendliness. Complemented by many small bars.
Returning after two years felt like coming home!

This is my 'go-to' place for my family and friends all of whom want to get to know a place, first and foremost via its food and markets. The stalls sell everything- fruit and vegetables, charcuterie, fish, meat, bread...There are a couple of specialist shops including one that sells plants, another selling nuts and spices, and one guy selling little burgers aka "sliders" with colourful buns enhanced with carrots, curry, tomatoes, spinach. Don't worry if you can't read the ingredients, nothing is going to kill you and may delight you. To get a feel for this wonderful island, you should get some Sobrassada, preferably Cerdo Negra. You spread it, as is, on robust, toasted bread but I stir it into everything- scrambled eggs, soups, pasta. It is a local sausage flavoured with pimiento (paprika). The fish is divine and if you aren't from around the Med you might not understand all the varieties but hake (merluza), monkfish (rape) and sea bass (lumina) are pretty fantabulous. The prawns too which will blow your mind Just go for it and ask for ice to keep it cool if you are going to be walking around afterwards, particularly in warmer weather. In fact, in warmer weather read further down and perhaps hit a restaurant in the area.
Pork is king here so you can't go wrong with the massive chops. If you are not in a position to buy food, i.e. if you are staying in a hotel, then you can take to the little bars around the perimeter that sell everything from sushi to coca, a local kind of pizza, or savour various little tapas, croquettas, tumbet which is like ratatouille. I could go on and on, or can't you tell? Go to the Market and wander in the surrounding streets of Santa Catalina where there are lovely cafés, cool shops, and restaurants should you want for more.

This is by far the best market I've ever seen anywhere for visual sensation. I wish we had something like this here in London. So much variety and a glorious riot of colour. The Marcardo D'Olivar is much bigger but not as good as this one (well maybe the fish section is better). However you must visit at least one of them!
The photos don't do it justice.
So much choice and all in fantastic condition. You can sit and eat and drink with the locals in the bars in the market and watch what happens.

Saturday afternoon, walking toward the Placa Espana I turned down a side street , just for a look and could suddenly hear lots of voices chatting happily. I went into the Mercado de Santa Catarina . The market was shut but the bars were open, stalls became impromptu tables for the fine looking food being served. I could only join in and have a beer and soak up the wonderful atmosphere.

Is there any parking near the market .
Written June 14, 2015
