I stumbled across this wonderful indoor market, which consists of tapas bars, butchers, fishmongers and delicatessens. I had lunch at La Tortillina, which is one of several eateries in ge place. I was served with some of the finest food I’ve eaten in Palma. Superb service too. Define a place for folk wanting a more authentic experience, highly recommended.

An oasis in the small and busy quarter of Santa Catalina. Fresh produces from the sea and the land displayed with passion and friendliness. Complemented by many small bars.
Returning after two years felt like coming home!

This is my 'go-to' place for my family and friends all of whom want to get to know a place, first and foremost via its food and markets. The stalls sell everything- fruit and vegetables, charcuterie, fish, meat, bread...There are a couple of specialist shops including one that sells plants, another selling nuts and spices, and one guy selling little burgers aka "sliders" with colourful buns enhanced with carrots, curry, tomatoes, spinach. Don't worry if you can't read the ingredients, nothing is going to kill you and may delight you. To get a feel for this wonderful island, you should get some Sobrassada, preferably Cerdo Negra. You spread it, as is, on robust, toasted bread but I stir it into everything- scrambled eggs, soups, pasta. It is a local sausage flavoured with pimiento (paprika). The fish is divine and if you aren't from around the Med you might not understand all the varieties but hake (merluza), monkfish (rape) and sea bass (lumina) are pretty fantabulous. The prawns too which will blow your mind Just go for it and ask for ice to keep it cool if you are going to be walking around afterwards, particularly in warmer weather. In fact, in warmer weather read further down and perhaps hit a restaurant in the area.
Pork is king here so you can't go wrong with the massive chops. If you are not in a position to buy food, i.e. if you are staying in a hotel, then you can take to the little bars around the perimeter that sell everything from sushi to coca, a local kind of pizza, or savour various little tapas, croquettas, tumbet which is like ratatouille. I could go on and on, or can't you tell? Go to the Market and wander in the surrounding streets of Santa Catalina where there are lovely cafés, cool shops, and restaurants should you want for more.

This is by far the best market I've ever seen anywhere for visual sensation. I wish we had something like this here in London. So much variety and a glorious riot of colour. The Marcardo D'Olivar is much bigger but not as good as this one (well maybe the fish section is better). However you must visit at least one of them!

The photos don't do it justice.

So much choice and all in fantastic condition. You can sit and eat and drink with the locals in the bars in the market and watch what happens.

Saturday afternoon, walking toward the Placa Espana I turned down a side street , just for a look and could suddenly hear lots of voices chatting happily. I went into the Mercado de Santa Catarina . The market was shut but the bars were open, stalls became impromptu tables for the fine looking food being served. I could only join in and have a beer and soak up the wonderful atmosphere.

We had amazing tapas at La Tapita in the Mercado de Santa Catalina. They were 1 euro a piece and so flavorful! The guys serving were very nice and helpful. The market was fun to walk around and the restrooms were clean.

The market in Santa Catalina is wonderful! Fantastic seafood, meats, vegetables, cheeses etc but also a shop with Foie Gras and Wine Merchants! There are small eating places such as La Tapita for tapas, seafood bar with fresh oysters, sushi etc. The atmosphere is wonderful so well worth a visit.

Delightful indoor food market. Smaller than the main market in central Palma. The surrounding streets have fabulous restaurants and shops. You can buy fish and meat and take it to the corner bar for cooking, great fun but the young guy there is always miserable.

I don’t think I’ve been to a cleaner market, the floors and stalls are spotless and the displays are bursting with colour and variety, whether it is fish, meat or vegetables, every display looks great. I guess the only downside is that quality, freshness and choice of product comes at a price, but sometimes it’s worth it .
