This Carmelite parish church w/ whitewashed façade & clock tower was built between 1726-38 and is situated in the heart Sant Francesc, the capital of the small island of Formentera. It was constructed to replace the Romanesque Chapel of Sa Tanca Vella (1336) and was fortified w/ several cannons on its roof until 1830 to protect the island from looting... More

We went at the wrong time of the day when the doors were firmly shut so we were unable to look round. Apparently it is very peaceful inside. Positioned in the middle of the town with the obligatory ale house opposite, perfect spot to include in your holiday itinary

L’Esglèsia de Sant Francesc Xavier is the main church in Formentera, and it is located in Sant Francesc Xavier, the main town in the island. Really it is not only a church, it is a complex castle-church and it is very beautiful (the church and the square, where the church is located). In fact, this building is the typical white... More

The church is a 'must visit' site. To do this you will automarically experience the amazing sight of San Francesci Xavier. The whole village is WHITE and looks like a film set! So pristine and clean and fresh! A complete contrast to the rest of the Island of Formentera. Explore a large number of interlinking roads and avenues, with wide... More

Visited this typical box shaped fortified whitewashed church on an escorted trip organised though my holiday resort. Located on an open village square opposite the council offices. Various other cafés and gift shops also on the square. Very simple whitewash inside with an impressive gilt gold alter at the back of the church. Visited late morning. Plenty of bench space... More

Typical balearic architecture, fortified white church. nice plaza. i went there at noon. It was siesta time, some kids playing soccer in front of the church. There are shops nearby, some where closed for siesta time.

The town and buildings around this church have expanded and yet not to the point of Bering obtrusive and interruptive of the small village feeling that I experienced 42 years ago when I first came here. It is even surprising that there is stil fields just behind the church. Please keep it this way.
