- Marg SSydney, Australia591 contributionsMonte Igueldo FunicularOn our second day in San Sebastián in Spain we took a walk up to the Fanicular, quite a long queue, cost €8.50 for two, but worth every Penny. What a spectacular view all over town and the seaside, fun rides for the kids, albeit a bit outdated. As we were recommended to visit, I now recommend everyone who visits this beautiful city to visit the Funicular too.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 21, 2023
- Mandy S5 contributionsExcellent visit. Would do this again.Views amazing. Enjoyed the funicular up and down. roller coaster and boat ride really good. Also bought iced slushies (warm weather 30c+) to cool kids down.. came in sturdy/reusable plastic containers. Kids kept those as souvenirs. Would we visit again? Absolutley yes, we would.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 21, 2023
- Mike B285 contributionsGreat ViewA must do in San Sebastian. A couple of km easy walk out of the old town to the other end of the bay. Ideally go there on a week day as weekend appeared very busy. eu9 return for two. Great views over the bay.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 28, 2024
- Nicnac7 contributionsFun with kidsAmusement park located at the top of a hill with the most amazing view of San Sebastián from the top. Don’t have too high expectations and you’ll have a great time. The rides are really old but charming. You pay for everything individually and can pay by card. Most rides were around 2.5-3 euros. Be aware that the rides close from 2-4pm so avoid going up the mountain in the middle of the day if you’re hoping to enjoy them.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 13, 2024
- Christine S19 contributionsStunning views of the bayWe got the funicular railway up after a pleasant walk along the bay, and wow, what a view of the whole town, and the mountains beyond! It was breathtaking.. Only downside was the 20 min plus wait in a queue for a drink, only one person serving in cafe bar at top, but once we had our drinks, didn't want to leave as was so beautiful. Definitely worth the trip.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 18, 2024

A nice refreshing hike up to the top that takes maybe around 45 minutes. You can also take the funicular if you don’t want to do it on foot. Either way you have to pay to enter which was around €2.30/each if you go by walking . They except card. You can also drive up as well. The attractions are old and cute. The view is beautiful but I’d recommend going on a sunny day if possible. There are rides, restaurants and cafes up there as well if you find yourself in need of a snack. We paid the extra €2.5/adult to go up to the lighthouse and we thought it was worth it. There are tons of old pictures and history to read about on the way up. We ended up taking the funicular back down because some nice strangers gave us a ticket. I’d still recommend the hike. 😉

It is so worth it to take the funicular up there for 3.75 euro round trip! At the top, except the views, there are also some attractions like an amusement park and food stalls and toilets. So you can spend some time there. It closes at 21 oclock, the last ride being 30 minutes before it. We enjoyed the sunset there. Amazing!

We had planned on getting the funicular to the top but it doesn't run on Wednesdays at the moment. Instead we got the number 16 bus up which was quick and efficient and you can pay by contactless credit card.
We missed the stop but it wasn't a problem to walk back, you get stunning coastal views and there is a pavement. Being out of season with the amusement park closed for maintenance we were very surprised to be asked to pay €2.50 to walk through to get to the view from the top. The guy collecting the money appeared from a building near the entrance stating 'you have to pay' in a very assertive way. We were unable to ascertain exactly what we were paying for and assumed that perhaps something was open and we just couldn't see it, so we paid. On continuing we found that absolutely nothing was open, not a cafe or bar, it was very much deserted apart from two other tourists. The only thing open was the hotel where we were able to get a drink and the view from their terrace is spectacular.
We loved the view but charging €2.50 to walk through a deserted amusement park is a complete rip off!

From the viewpoint on Monte Igueldo, visitors to San Sebastian will get a very good photo of the bay, the city, and Monte Urgull on the opposite side of the U-shaped bay. I could see the long seaside promenade all along the bay and even see part of the walk around Mont Urgull with the old town nestled at its base. The green grounds of the red brick Miramar Palace where easy to locate as well. We arrived at the mountain top the easy way - with our cruise ship excursion bus, but visitors can access this viewpoint using the funicular at the base of the mountain. There wasn't much to do at the viewpoint except to take photos. There were just a few rides for young children, but they were closed in the early morning of our visit. No vendors offered food around the little playground, but one could go into the Hotel Mercure for refreshments. The public washroom was not free; the attendant wanted .20E. If you are on an ocean cruise, I recommend taking the excursion into San Sebastian as the ship will dock in Pasajes Port.

We love going up to the mountain via the funicular . But due to COVID it’s quite a different experience and the crowds in the waiting hall at the base for the funicular up ,are very big at times and few people do keep their distance . Inside the carriage is also quite a close environment so may be best avoided in current pandemic . Otherwise it’s a highlight of San Sebastián.

The hike up isn't too bad. You just need to stay out of the way of cars, but they are going slow. The views are outstanding. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instaed of 5 is there is an amusement park (it's small), and you have to pay 2.50 per person just to get to the vantage point, even without a car or taking the funicular. It's worth it, though, because the view really is better at the very top.

I think this is worth a stop. One of the famous sculptures is very close by, so you can pop over to see it first and then walk to the funicular. It runs every 15 minutes and it is not long to get to the top. There is a bunch of stuff up there but most of it was closed the day we went - just the cafe, souvenir shop, and tower were open. We paid the $2.50 Euros to climb the tower and it is worth it - the 360 view is spectacular. Make sure you hold on to your funicular ticket as they do check on the way down too.

We visited here as a family of 8 - 4 adults, 4 children ages 8-12, you pay to enter the viewing area but apparently it’s nothing to do with the theme park. So when we entered the park at approximately 1.30pm and then all the rides closed at 2pm until 3.30pm for lunch, we were surprised and quite upset. By this point we had managed to go only one ride. We asked why they didn’t advise us when we entered, the woman shrugged her shoulders and said basically wasn’t her problem.
This grievance to one side, the whole place is run down, unloved and in massive need of a reform. It reminded me of a post- apocalyptic theme park from a film set. The mountain roller coaster was the one ride we went on. It lasts for a grand total of 90 seconds. Seriously do not bother to go.

This landmark is worth a visit, mainly because of the combination of elements to the experience.
Firstly, there’s the classic funicular ride to and from the summit; then there’s the early 20th century amusement park at the top which is free to wander around; there’s the 18thC tower and museum (for a small additional fee); and finally the views over San Sebastián and the coast line.
The funicular doesn’t start running until 11am so we were ready for a coffee when we reached the summit. Luckily it wasn’t too bad (Spanish coffee is mostly average and hardly anyone has heard of a flat white) and there were also fresh churros available along with plenty of other snack and bar options.
The amusement park has the classic rides including a dodgy-looking rollercoaster, bumper cars, mini railway and House of Horrors- none of which we bothered with but I can see why they would be appealing to kids and they look great.
The view is fantastic, especially from the tower, and the museum and interior climb (I assume the lift can be ordered for those with mobility issues) are well maintained and interesting.
The buses run to and from it regularly- we walked to it from the old town but bussed back. All in all a diverting attraction.

The price if you go up by car is €2.5 per person. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (it is a private area, so you cannot go up at any time). It is well worth going up and paying that small amount because the views are magnificent.

How long does it take to ride the funicular up the mountain?
Written June 19, 2016
About 5 mins, nice views, and lots to do at the top, and that's if you just go for the different views! I would strongly recommend going up the castle tower to the Best View in the World, and afterwards have a surprisingly affordable drink in the hotel bar to savour those views in peace.

Good morning! We will be using a car. Is it a safe drive up the hill, even if the weather is not perfect? Thank you!
Written January 25, 2016
We were in a tour bus that went up the mountain but the road is narrow. Otherwise, cars shouldn't have a problem.
