We walked past this very large building when we were on our way to lunch, headed to the old city. It is set on an open square, so you can step back and get a good look, or even a photo. We did not linger as we were hungry.

This was a venue for the San Sebastián Film Festival. At 4:30 SEBERG was shown. An intense film staring Kristen Stewart. Both she and the director were there to introduce the film and to speak a little about filming the movie. The film revolves around her lifestyle and family. She is in nearly every scene. The theater is the Opera House of San Sebastián and we managed to find box seats on the second level about half way back. A great location to view the film. The time went by ever so quickly. You enter to the Grand Staircase, and tile work is right and left and centered above your head. We noticed an open doorway and curiosity took over. The Theater had nearly emptied so alone in a seating room with some very beautiful paintings we found ourselves. I took about 11 photos on my camera, but none I can send. Recommend if you are ever in San Sebastián and want performance art.

We were lucky enough to have gotten the final two available tickets for pianist James Rhodes's concert in Donostia. The acoustics of the theater was superb and the Rhodes treated us with a wonderful selection of Bach and Chopin pieces. A night to remember...despite being it a cold and rainy night!

A very handsome building in beautiful surroundings. Very well located. Gorgeous inside with lovely seats, though a high railing obscures views from the upper floor a little and shows tend to be overpriced.

The theatre looks so splendid from outside but performances are rare. However I went on a walking tour from the Tourist Office called Romantic San Sebastian which took us inside the theatre. We saw just the main foyer, a dazzling white marble hall and staircase, and the auditorium. This is splendid and beautiful and, though it dates from the early part of the 20th century, has the classical appearance of theatres designed a couple of decades before. It is kept in the most perfect condition and it's tragic that it is used so seldom.

We wandered past this cafe and decide to eat here as it looked so popular!
Well we ended up going back again for dinner the next night!
The food was delicious- really relaxed atmosphere with plenty of seating.
Only criticism is that they don't seem to have enough wait staff meaning it can be a bit slow to be served but food still comes quickly.

The theater is an awesome civic addition to the San Sebastian repertoire of treasures. Someone loved this lady a whole lot (and many may still do) to honor her with such a fantastically beautiful legacy. Color me mightily impressed What does our guide know about the woman behind the screen? Inquiring minds want to know. Here is the story:
So, in its present use, the theater hosts music, ballet, theater, and cinema. There's also dancing and some other contemporary uses. Back to the lady ...
Alfonso XIII of Spain took a fancy to the Scottish lovely Eugenia who had a couple of "issues" as (1) she was Protestant, and (2) she is quite possibly a 50% carrier of hemophiliac disease, as she was somewhat related to Queen Victoria. But she was so beautiful! And he was smitten! And so they wed (but not to live happily ever after).
Uppn their marriage, she converted to Catholicism and, when riding in their wedding carriage, an assassination attempt nearly ended her life. Not so fortunate the guard next to her. But she was so-oh-so beautiful.
Upon son #1's circumcision, bleeding was profuse, Hemophilia raised its ugly head. Her husband blamed her. Act One: Highway to hell, part one. Did I mention she was incredibly beautiful?
And they eventually parted ways (she left for Switzerland) but this wonderful architectural creation came into being while she was Queen and it is named in her honor. The schedule of events shows on the building marquee. Don't know how this would work for non-Spanish speaking people.

I used to dread watching anything long in this theater. The seats were uncomfortable and there was no seeing over the person in front of you. I used to wait till lights went off, then sneak out to find an empty chair in the box seat area. But all that is past, the renewed theater is quite splendid, and now a patron can actually enjoy the plush Belle Epoch grandeur of this place. You can see movies there during the Film Festival in September, as well as normal stage theater productions. Acoustics are great. This has become a terrific experience instead of an agony!
