This is much smaller and less hectic than the Madrid stations. There is a beautiful stained glass mural at the north end of the interior. Neither of the employees in the ticket office spoke English but I can get along in Spanish and they were both very helpful and pleasant as I had several transactions.
TRAVEL TIP: Renfe (the Spanish rail system) offers an excellent bargain for travelers age 60 and older. It is called Tarjeta Dorada, which means Gold Card. The people at the front desk of our hotel had not heard of it. The very pleasant young woman at the Bilbao Tourist Office had heard of it but didn't know where we could buy cards. I finally bought them at the ticket office in the Abando Station. If you are a senior and plan to do any significant rail travel in Spain, I strongly recommend that you purchase one of these. Each person needs her/his own. The cards cost 6€ and you get a substantial discount, the amount varying according to the type of train.

A pretty miserable railway station with limited seating for waiting passengers - we were travelling down to Madrid and had to wait for the morning train and it was a boring wait!

We were visiting the Tourist Information Center in the city center and discovered that Bilbao's main train station was right next door. As we would be leaving the city from there in a few days, we decided to check out the facility. Perfectly laid out for travelers, the relatively small station, compared with those in Madrid and Barcelona, has tracks at its uppermost level, easily accessed by escalator.
Helpful directional signs exist and there is direct access to the metro. Many eateries, including a Burger King, offer food to eat before or after a trip or to take on the train. Shops offer other items that travelers may want or need. I found the station to be clean and well maintained with few people in the halls on an early weekday afternoon.
Sunlight streamed through a huge stained-glass window on the top level. where passengers descend from the tracks to the lobby. I thought this artwork was well worth making a special trip to view when in Bilbao. Installed in 1948, the piece features a central clock and local scenes, such as Basque farmhouses, the San Anton Bridge and the steel industry.
When it came time to leave Bilbao, our initial trip to the station paid off. We knew where we needed to go and made it to our train with ease.

the interior of the train station is beautiful. The glass mural is colourful and says about the basque history.

Takes you to center of the city of Bilbao. Has a Burger King that is open on Sundays when its hard to find alternatives (but get set for a long line to receive your food order). Across the street, you can catch the Metro (Subway) or a local tram. As well, it is half a block away from a seven floor department store (with a great supermarket on the sixth floor) and about 3.5 blocks from the city's only Starbucks. You may be thinking, why would I go to Starbucks instead of trying local alternatives, but after a while you may get tired of the small expressos and want a big serious hit of a brewed coffee or an Americano.

Abando railway station, in the Bilbao city center, near Casco Viejo (the old town), features a magnificent glass stained window (photo below). According to Bilbao Turismo "with motives of the life and customs of the city (it has references to the Basilica of Begoña, the bridge of San Antón, Basque farmhouses, the steel industry, fishing and sport) which summarizes the history of the city".
At Plaza Circular (= Plaza Biribila), turn into Hurtago de Amézaga and it's immediately on your left. Take the escalator up to the train tracks.
You can get to the station on foot, or use the Abando metro stop.
While you are there, I would suggest you walk around the block to the river bank (5'), where there is a beautiful gate to the Bilbao-Concordia station (photo below).
Enjoy your stay!
