The fin-de-siecle art-nouveau station itself's astonishing, and it's got an excellent bar-restaurant where you can get a good lunch at a reasonable price, but even more importantly it's where you can get on one of the slow FEVE trains that head for Santander two or three times a day. It's a wonderful trip (especially for the first half) through a hidden landscape of lush green valleys, thick woods, fat horses in tiny, steep fields, vegetable gardens, flower-covered stone cottages, toy stations with ancient water-bowsers, orchards, wild flowers, and streams of crystal-clear water. Very definitely worth doing if you have a few hours to spare. Get out and come back round about halfway if you don't feel like doing the second half.

Don't bother with the interior, as it is just like a typical modern metro station inside. But the Art Deco exterior is fantastic. Stand across the street and admire the beautiful steel and glass construction that take you back to the exciting days of train travel.

I highly recommend a walking tour of Bilbao. It is a nice way to enjoy this city without hassling with the traffic. This site was included in our tour.

The tile work on the face of this station is truly unique and a little awe-inspiring. Even if you are not using the station for travel, it is still worth a visit and a photo opportunity to see it in person.

The station has a beautiful cast iron facade facing onto the river; the other item of note is to follow the station through to the Estacion de Albano to see the beautiful stained glass window depicting people, places and industries of the Basque Country

We walked past this beautiful building The Estacion de Santander on our way back from the Old Town to our hotel. It is very impressive seen from the Bridge.

This is the main train station in Bilbao with good connectivity to many parts of Spain (trains to Madrid, Barcelona and some more local stops along the way) which is going to be developed over the years to a more integrated multi modal hub. However before they start work, do go and see this wonderful glass mural, depicting many aspects of Bilbao life as considered important by the glass makers in the early 1940's. Franco apparently opened this depiction and it is well done, with the Spanish coat of arms firmly in the centre, at a time of great national pride.
The station as a whole is unremarkable although fully functioning and efficient. The entrance hall with its clock is also worth consideration.

Bilbao city centre has 3 railway stations. Santander is one of 2 small stations for narrow gauge trains and is next to the larger Spanish National Railways station about a 120 metres away. The outer west wall is a superb example of Art Nouveau architecture (iron and glass) with the detail meticulously picked out in different colours. (The TA avatar above gives a very good impression.)

I got to the station to take a train to Logrono.

As I got on an escalator to go the platform, I looked back to see where the Carrefour supermarket was. Then there! I saw a beautiful stained glass window!

Even if you are not taking the train from there, I would highly recommend to see the window.
