Bilbao city hall is built on the Plaza Ernesto Erkoreka, on the site of the Monastery of Saint Augustine which was destroyed after the first carlist war. Construction on the Joaquín Rucoba project lasted 9 years and was completed only in 1892. Architect Rucoba was inspired by public architecture of the III French Republic and selected the neo-Baroque style. However, unlike the French City halls, the Hotel de Ville, you can`t come in. Only during an official reception or wedding. There`s the motif to visit. This is the interior stylized Mudehar. However, I don`t intend to marry in Bilbao for this purpose. The sculpture of the modern Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza is located in front of the town hall. It represents either 1 Euro or 2 euros. Why would that be?

Visible on the tram ride along the river between the Guggenheim and the old town, the baroque City Hall was just a quick opportunity for a photo. It certainly was elegantly looking for a public administrative building. It had a similar appearance to the Opera Theater in the old town as both were designed by the same person in the late 1800's. I especially liked the two upper levels with sculptured detail around the windows. Rather than having stone carved figures as corbels like those on the theater, the City Hall had niches for statues. The red flag flying outside was a further indication that this building was the City Hall.

The City Hall is located at Plaza Ernesto Erkoreka, 1. This building was finished in 1892 and is by the bank of the river. The architect was Joaquin Rucoba. The building is very elegant and highly ornamented and the architecture is eclectic. Rucoba was inspired by French architecture of the Third Republic. At the main balcony, there are three arches with eight columns. The building is topped with a bell tower. At the central staircase there are sculptures that represent Law and Justice. Above there are four sculptures that flank the building. There is an Arab Hall that is extraordinary, the work of Jose Soler, who painted the room in imitation marble, wood, and ivory. This hall is used for official receptions and weddings.

We walked by here but the big draw was the garden across the street! We enjoyed the walk, the architecture of the building and the glorious day! It was worth seeing the formation of the town and how everything is laid out!

This is a large, imposing Baroque style building which dates to 1892. We admired it from the outside but did not go in, as apparently drop-in tourist visits are not permitted. I would not advise a special trip to see it. If you happen to pass by, look at its symmetric structure with a central tower and two side wings and the statues outside the front door.

A very imposing building on the river. Typical of so many municipal buildings around the world. As far as I could see no access inside. Imposing

Hard to review this because as others before me have correctly pointed our, this is a working civic building d you cannot just go without appointment
Nevertheless it's a stunner to look at with such an ornate facade. Easy to find, it's right by the river close to the old town and is definitely worth a photo stop

If you walk along the riverside paths from the Guggenheim to the Old Town you will marvel at this splendid piece of architecture on the way. It is near the Ponte del Ayuntamiento.

If you walk along the river bank to go to or from the Guggenheim Museum, then you are certain to see this imposing building on the opposite bank. Entry is not permitted unless it is with a guided tour, and smiling nicely at the security guard does not work.

Their were loads of people demonstrating about climate change the day we visited Bilbao. It was amazing to see and yet all seemed to remain peaceful.
