The Opera Theater has some interesting baroque details on its creamy exterior, but I had to crane my head to look at them as most of these sculptures were on the upper two levels. The best view of them is from the Areatzako bridge that crosses over the river at the entrance to old town. I could see cute naked cupids pIaying musical instruments like the cello and a flute with a music stand separating the group. I also liked the use of sculpted figures for decorative corbels at the corners of the building.
This theater was designed by the same person who designed the City Hall and, when looking at my photos, I could see the similarity in the shape of the round windows with their sculpted details and the odd looking ground level of the building that was punctuated with many tall brown doors.
We used the tram line to get to the old town which conveniently had a station by this Opera Theater. We didn't visit the inside as it was closed on a mid-week morning in October.

The Arriaga Theater is located at Plaza Arriaga, 1. This theater was inspired by the Paris Opera House and finished in 1890, the architects being Joaquin Rucoba and Octavio de Toledo. It is named after Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga, a local composer, and his bust is found at the imperial staircase. The facade is a mixture of many styles. The theater had electric lighting, which at that time was the latest technological advance. A fire on Dec. 22, 1914, destroyed the building. Architect Federico de Ugalde was hired to rebuild the theater, making it larger and safer. The new inauguration of the theater took place on June 5, 1919, with the performance of Don Carlo by Giuseppe Verdi. In 1978 the City Hall took ownership of the theater from private sources. The building was closed due to its poor condition. In 1980 the building was renovated and it reopened on Dec. 5, 1986. The theater is used for opera, ballet, concerts, and theater.

For just 5 euros you can take a guided tour of this beautiful theatre. The architecture is also magnificent. Also most performances start at about 20.00 hours should you wish to see a show. It is situated in the old part of Bilbao and close to the Plaza Nueva.

If you have a student ID in most shows you can get half price tickets! (Last 30 mn, if there are any tickets left.) But this is a huge hall, so there should be. Don't go for the cheaper, although it is also ok, but first 3 levels are better. (with %50 discount you can get some for about 15 euro..)
Once you buy the tickets, it is not allowed -and they check constantly- to change levels or seats. so if you but cheaper ones, you will have to sit there even if the hall is empty. (Believe me we did everything to sneak in other levels. no way.)

Came to Bilbao for the food and only bought theatre tickets on a whim
But what a building! And an awesome performance - very local and raw, but highly professional
We loved that this place has no bar or shop inside, nobody selling programmes (they are free) and no real hint of commercialism
You get the impression they are running it like a theatre for the sake of being a theatre for theatre lovers to enjoy, opposed to a business for the sake of shareholders
Just go.

When I got to Bilbao, a tour inside the Arriaga was on my list. Unfortunately guided tours of grand opera theatres have to fit round their rehearsal & performance schedules, so I confined myself to outside views. Having seen many of Europe's finest this one strongly reminded me of Paris Garnier or the Semper in Dresden. In evening sun in particular this beautiful pile positively glows. It occupies a fairly tight spot between the modern tramway and the murky looking Nervion River.

In 1983, a devastating flood swept through Bilbao, reaching up to almost the main architectural level of the theatre above the powerful sculptures. To the credit of the authorities, the opera house was restored and today is as beautiful as ever.
Standing in a prominent location on the bank of the river, between the old and new towns, the building is a fine baroque masterpiece from 1890 by architect Joaquin Rucoba who also built the city hall, which is also worth visiting. The detailing and sculpture is, as you would expect, exuberant.
There are guided tours available, though I have never been there at the right time. Perhaps some day, I might see an opera there.

El Teatro Arriaga, tiene una visibilidad muy buena. Es un recinto muy bien distribuido, por lo tanto esa fila me parece muy bien. Yo estuve viendo ¡Mama mía! más atrás y lo vimos fenomenal
