Bilbao is much nicer than I imagined and this area is particularly enjoyable especially the riverside area and immediately vicinity. Went into the riverside market hall (Mercado de la Ribera, built 1929)too but it isn't that special despite apparently being the largest indoor market in Europe. There are various decent stalls however.

What used to be the center of the city is not a must visit opportunity which not only has the charm of the curvy streets but has also a market which not only sells regular fresh produce on its half but on the other half there are several spots which only sell pintxos and beer (or wine) depending of your... The old quarter of Bilbao is one of the most charming areas of the city. You can just walk around or delight youself tasting some pintxos or shopping in any of the traditional shops you can find around.

Bilbao used to be an industrial area from Spain. I love the combination of old buildings a new ones. Lovely to go for a walk. Full of bars with a great atmosphere at all times. On Sunday there are lots of places closed

Down one of the streets at night was a great place to hang out, would suit young travellers, the usual Pintchos and drinks served out on the street, lush

Wander through the "7 streets" that make the old city. Lovely churches. Spectacular Plaza Nueva. Enjoy a meal or a drink in one of the many bar/restaurants.

Casco Viejo is my kind of area... old town with plenty of character and culture. I particularly enjoy the narrow streets with quirky little bars that aren't decorated with fancy signage advertising it presence. This area is perfect for access to many parts of the city, mostly within easy walking distance.
