The oldest used civil monument in Spain.
Jun 2019
The fountain of Foncalada is the oldest used civil monument in Spain. It was restored in the 90s of the XX century and was included in the UNESCO world heritage List in 1998 as part of the Monuments of Oviedo and the Kingdom of Asturias. Signs of king Alfonso III of Asturias and a primitive drainage channel have been discovered by archaeologists. You can go to the source, but you can't get water. No water flows from it...

Supposedly the oldest medieval public building in Europe
May 2018 • Couples
We came across the Foncalada when returning to our hotel from our evening meal in Calle Gascona. It is a spring with a protective building.

The oldest early medieval public building - still in working order
Mar 2018 • Couples
When you look for Foncalada you need to look low - the level of the street during last millenium went up a bit so the spring and the protective building are now located below the street which bears its name. It is supposed to be the oldest medieval public building in Europe, it is certainly interesting so drop by after you had your sidra in Calle Gascona!

How does one rate a 12th century public work? No credit card needed to visit. Look for vestiges of early
Oviedo as you wander the city.

Still poring water
Aug 2017 • Couples
A very old fountain that still is poring water naturally. The place is very small and besides watching small amounts of water coming out from the soil nothing else to see there.

Jun 2017 • Couples
We diverted here on our return to our hotel. interesting to see the source of the city's water supply in days gone by but littel to see really. Historians only will be impressed.

Free and fast, worth a visit

This little fountain represents a historical moment in the creation of public works for the public use, and is a quick stop and good photo op.

A unique pre-romanesque survival
May 2014 • Solo
Although it may seem unremarkable to look at - a small, stone, hut-shaped building in a dip below present-day ground level, by a road - this is the only construction that we have from the early middle ages that was meant for the use of the general public, and as such it's fascinating. Or I thought so anyway. Does the Asturian cross above the opening suggest that the King gave it to the people ? Was it for travellers ? Market-goers ? And what does the mysterious Latin inscription mean ?
