You could say that Oviedo is built around the Monastery of San Pelayo, the child martyr saints, whose relics are venerated in the church. Home to a community of Benedictine nuns, it's best to be present at one of the services that they sing every day. On certain open days, it;s also possible to visit the monastic enclosure, which is fascinating. Don't forget to buy some of the monastic produce, especially biscuits.

We went to see the Monastery of San Pelayo at 7 pm, when it was open. That is when they have the Mass. The altar is very simple, with a cross over the altar table. What is interesting is the small chest where the body of San Pelayo is stored. This saint was only 14 years old when he was captured by the Moors and then put to death by the Moorish king.

The Monasterio de San Pelayo is a convent for women of the Benedictine order. The community is a working monastery founded in the 10th century under the patronage of Teresa Ansúez, and was dedicated to John the baptist. Although the monastery does partially function as a guesthouse, it’s doesn't appear to be generally open to the public, so we just admired the renaissance building from the outside.

The Monasterio de Benedectinas is not opened to the public generally - it is however a magnificent imposing building worth seeing.

The Nuns encourage the participation in the Lauds and the Psalms that are chanted in the Monasterio Church - this is worth doing for the deep mystic experience of devotion the magnificent setting and the good singing, it is a particularly moving experience for a believer.

The Reposteria offers a small but extraordinarily sophisticated selection of souvenirs all hand made at a very reasonable price, the sweets are delicious and the nun in charge a consummate experienced sales lady that many have to learn from ! You do not exit empty handed but you are as well sure to have bought some delicious or unique and at a bargain ...and you have given money to s good cause !

We were only able to enjoy viewing the exterior of this building but it is certainly worth walking past if you are in the area.
