The main motive for visiting mount Naranco on the slope of which Oviedo is located are two churches included in the UNESCO world heritage list. I lived in an IBIS at the foot of the mountain, so I walked to them. Both the still pre-Romanesque churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo are half way to the top. The ascent follows the route of the Vuelta Cycling race. By the way some are going on the bike. It's not easy, even Miguel Indurain, a five-time Tour de France winner, had problems here. But You don't have a lung volume of 8 liters like him. Sagrado Corazón de Jesús will be the reward of whoever made it. This monument was built in 1950 and has the same symbolism as Christ the Redeemer on mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. Looking at it from the bottom, I did not go further up after San Miguel de Lillo. By the way, I took the bus 2A back part of the route. I don't know if you can ride it to the top, but part of the way is for sure.

We weren't planning to go up. We arrived by public transport to visit San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco, but what was our surprise was that they are closed for restoration works. Once there we asked a countryman to go up Mount Naranco and he told us that there was a road, but that it was better and much more beautiful to go up along a path that started from San Miguel de Lillo, passing through Fonte los Pastores. The path is quite steep and you have to take it slowly, but in a little over half an hour you are at the top. The views are stunning. Then when we went down we asked another man and we went on another side, we ended up making a good circular. Highly recommended.

The ancient church Santa María del Naranco is situated on the slopes of Monte Naranco, a few miles outside Oviedo. We really enjoyed the guided tours (all in Spanish), and the views from up there are breathtaking. Great place to spend a morning,

When we arrived in Oviedo we weren't too sure what to see or do so we went to the tourist office located at the bottom of the park, Campo San Francisco, and they were very helpful and told us to come here. We took the number 10 bus from the top of Calle Uria and when we got on the bus an old woman told us to stay on the bus to the top to see the two old churches which was great advice. We saw the two churches which were great but heavily restored. We then continued to the top of Monte Naranco, it isn't very well sign posted but from the two churches just head up and you will get there! It is quite a steep walk but not too far so easily done. Once you reach the top it is well worth it for the views and the statue of Jesus, which is surprisingly big! No shops around so definitely take water and maybe a picnic for the top if it's a nice day!

I love this region of Spain! So my son and decided to go out for a quick walk to the local park nearby to think about what we will do for the day, and my son notices a large figure atop the mountains...it didn't seem far..so I said let's go check it out! For me it was the best unexpected hike ever...it took us 3 hours to get the there, but what we discovered along the way was amazing...there is much to see, it was like a mini adventure/exploration! I would do it again wit out a second thought. Once you arrive to the top, you will see why every step was worth it. Love Nature

Me and my grandfather decided to walk up to Monte Naranco as we'd heard that there was excellent views of Asturias. We'd already visited the cathedral, so thought this would be a good thing to do for a day.
On the way up we realised that we were passing the Santa Maria Del Naranco and the San Miguel Del Lillo, two beautiful buildings that are also listed as attractions on TripAdvisor.
It was about 3km from the two aforementioned buildings to the top of Monte Naranco and could get very steep at a couple of points, but the Christ statue at the summit, along with the views, made it worth it.
Would recommend (even if just go up by car)

This is the mountain with a Christ statue on top that overlooks the whole city of Oviedo, surrounded by its ring of hills. You can drive up to the top for an excellent view over the city. It is well worth doing if you have the wheels.

Monte Naranco was not on our initial list of must-see places in Oviedo...mainly because we didn't know how to get there. Lucky for us, some friends of our suggested a drive there and we were glad we did. The 35 meter high statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was first visible from our hotel and very impressive up close. Aside from the beautiful views of Oviedo, you can also visit 2 World Heritage Sites, Iglesia San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco. These have been around since the 12th Century! The history is amazing. While there, make sure to stop by Restaurante Parrilla Buenos Aires. We were there for lunch had barbequed ribs and it was absolutely delicious!

Absolutely fantastic views from several garage points. A long precarious winding road up to summit. Many people walk or cycle. Couple restaurants near the top.
Not suitable for people with mobility problems. Gets very busy at certain times so parking can be a problem.
Couple of Roman buildings worth exploring a road up.
Lots of great photo opportunities.
Highly recommended.

Staying with some friends, they suggested we have a "walk up this hill" When we got there, we realised it was more than a walk and more than a hill ! However, 10 and 60 year olds included we all made it to the top and it was worth it. Fantastic views over the city and surrounding countrysides. Its a bit of a hike but worth persevering!
