The urban landscape of Oviedo is adorned by sculptural works, generally commemorative monuments dedicated to characters of special relevance and some of purely artistic indulgence. My personal favourite is La bella Lola in Plaza del Fontán as it embodies so many emotions in the figure and the setting. Honourable mention also goes to La Maternidad by Botero and one of at least three sculptures on the trail honouring motherhood. Estatua de Mafalda, Las Guisanderas and Esperanza Caminando evoke the halcyon days of childhood, while La Lechera, Vendedor de pescado, Pescadera and Vendedoras del Fontán evoke the days of yore when life was much harder

It is said that there are more than a hundred sculptures in the public spaces of the capital of the Principality of Asturias, Oviedo. This is likely to be the case, as wherever you go, you stumble upon a work of art.

I think the most popular are the statues of Woody Allen and Mafalda. Unquestionably, they're selfie meat. Sometimes you have to stand in line to get a picture. Santiago Botero’s “La Maternidad”, the irreverent “Culis monumentalibus”, the endearing “Rufo, the Dog of Oviedo” and “La regenta”, a figurative work dedicated to the transgressive protagonist of Leopoldo Alas’s novel of the same name “Clarín”, are also much commented on and photographed.

In addition, there are others that although they do not attract crowds, it does not mean that they lack artistic merits. This is the case of Salvador Dalí’s “Man on Dolphin,” which is located on the slab of the train station. Between this and the bus terminal is the disturbing Abstract Expressionist work “Menina” and in Campo de San Francisco Park is located a monolith that remembers the holocaust, “Monument to the victims of the Shoah”.

One striking fact: in Oviedo there are — at least — three sculptures dedicated to motherhood. It could be a Guinness record or a buried Ovet obsession.

We liked Oviedo so much that we came twice in the same week. Parking was easy and Oviedo is a very clean city. There are plenty of great cafes and bars to sit out and watch the world go by. We loved the statues dotted all around the city and the central park. Very relaxing indeed.

These (apparently more than 100) mostly bronze characters which decorate the squares, gardens and streets of Oviedo, have made this town memorable to me. Made walking around so enjoyable! Great photos too!

I particularly like the sculptures in the Campo San Francisco, 3 are dedicated to maternity, with very different styles. Going to find all the sculptures is like a treasure hunt. Lovely pictures to make, whatever the weather will be like. And even at night, some get quite impressive. You'll love the ones near El Fontán, the ones near Transcorrales...The one in Plaza Porlier....Not to mention the two most known (will you guess ?) in the center.

My stay in Oviedo was one day but was unforgettable. The whole citycenter is full of the sculptures. I am not so big fan of art but this art was great. You are visiting the center, enjoy the buildings and also for free the sculptures. I like Oviedo and would like to go back.

The ones I saw had no merit or interest whatsoever. If you come across one, just try to ignore the thing. Look the other way. Have a drink. Go to see the archaeological museum or the Museo de Bellas Artes or something. Smell a flower.

(I particularly hate the one in the bustle near the cathedral.)

The capital of Asturias is a stylish city with a rich history. It couldnёt pass by the epidemic of monument installation of the last 30 years. There are about 100 of them in the city and apparently Oviedo is close to running out of squares and intersections to install them. Some of them are quite stylish like La Vida and La Regenta, some with humor (La bella Lola, Stew.). There`s the provocative sculptor Botero with his aesthetic of the ugly, who filled the whole of Yerevan with his sculptures, but spared Oviedo (only 1 sculpture). Fans of art-house movies are certainly looking for a statue of American Director Woody Allen who shot his next neurotic film "Vicky, Christina, Barcelona" including in Oviedo and captured in bronze for this. All this doesn`t cause negative emotions, except for the monument to dictator Franco in Plaza Espana. Descendants of hundreds of thousands of repressed Republicans are demanding the removal of the bronze Caudillo, which offends the memory of the victims with its presence. And judging by the decision of the court in the Valley of the fallen, the Republicans will achieve justice in Oviedo.

If you wander the many streets of Oviedo, you'll come upon the many statues. There's info to help you find them but it's fun to happen upon them. I went right to Woody Allen's and there was a line! Great statues. Great town.
