We were looking for a place to eat and found Restaurante El Fontán (see my review there). And walking away from it, we stumbled onto this. The square was bustling with people and it was almost 5pm! It looked as though all the restaurants there were full. Why didn't we find this square before? I'm sure we'd had a more interesting lunch than the one we just had!
Verdict: if you're undecided as to where to go for a bite, come here!

nice place to sit and enjoy a drink or why not some "tapas"- popular with the locals. There are several "drinking holes" and all serve nice food at fair prices and just before or after go for a walk in the old part of town, visit the cathedral, main square and why not the market if open.

I loved spending a couple of hours in this sunny plaza enjoying a menu del dia whilst watching the sidra waiters pour glasses from a great height. Even funnier watching tourists trying to recreate the motion!

It was cold and rainy when my husband and I went to Plaza del Fontan for the second time. Our very first visit was in June of this year. Rain or shine, it is a very charming place to be with friends, and family.

The old streets and Plazas of Oviedo are lovely. Here you get surrounding steeped in history and building that are well cared for. Lots of cafe, bars and restaurants. Had a very pleasant time strolling around.
The highlight, on a Saturday, was the band of Asturian dancers, singers, bagpipe players and band in the plaza. It was a real delight to watch them perform and no-one asked for money.
A must-see experience.

There's something for everyone here; flowers, umbrellas, clothing, cheese, shoes. It's colourful and busy. My favourite day to visit is Friday to see the flower sellers. On Sunday there are folk groups and dancers and you can hear the traditional bagpipes. The market meanders through the squares and streets of the old city. There are plenty of cafes, bars and places to stop for snacks. The whole area is well paved and walking or as in my case, wheelchair use is easy.
