Historically and culturally this is a must see when in Seville. The wealth of the church is definitely on display through the gold and silver, demonstrating incredible artistry. Unfortunately, I suspect much of the gold and silver came from the Mayan and Aztec peoples being conquered resulting in their artistry being destroyed.
However, what is here is really something to behold and absorb.

No visit to this area is complete without a visit inside the Basilica which houses the famous statue of the Virgen de la Esperanza Macarena, standing above the main altar amid waterfalls of gold and silver.
The Basilica is open for service every day so it’s worth checking times to ensure you do not interrupt mass.

The "weeping virgin" takes centre stage during the Easter processions or Semana Santa as she is paraded through the streets on an epic 13 hr tour. Floats often weigh over a ton!

If you've never seen videos of this spectacle have a look.

The Basilica was built recently in 1949 and houses the beloved statue of the Virgin de la Esperanza Macarena. The impressive statue stands above the main altar covered with gold and silver. Worth a visit.

The Macarena is probably one of the best well-known churches in Seville. I was curious about it and I don’t regret having gone there but the church, apart from being searched by the devotees, it is not a major work of art. I advise you to go there if you are in the nearby, but not to change your trip plan only to go there. Enjoy!

This church has the wow factor. Three stunning altars and beautiful ceiling painting. You don't have to have any religious leanings to appreciate the splendour or this basilica. It is away from Seville centre but the hop on hop off buses stop here.

A precious holy place at the heart of the community, it is beautiful throughout. From its impressive façade to the glory within.

Exquisite artistry is everywhere. A glorious main altar is dazzling. Much ornamented statuary is to be seen.

A very pretty church (as you would expect) but with one truly spectacular item that makes it stand out from the rest. The statue of the Madonna above the altar, is actually held in the float that is removed at festival time. Looking at previous photos, it appears they also change her clothing - when I visited she was wearing striking bright blue and she was your main focus, housed in the bright silver of the float provided a stunning view. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Basilica the Macarena constitutes great example of baroque architecture. Interior of the church is beautifully decorated and very well maintained. Between the services it is allowed to walk around and take pictures. Guided tours provide benefit of learning history and interesting legends about basilica.

Compared to the cathedral this is a rather low key church. Built in 1949, just after WOII when resources were scarce. Neobaroque is not my favourite style and the splendour displayed inside perhaps goes against the grain of the Protestant north of Europe. Gold, silver, tears that are diamonds contrast strongly to the humility and modest lifestyle of Jesus. Still interesting to observe the believers. For them, precious metals and art objects are a gift, a way to honour the holy virgin.

Go and visit.
