    I will be back.
Magnificent museum. Important works, if you are interested in painting you should not overlook it. The building is a marvel with its patios and its tile work. The best thing has been visiting it almost alone....a privilege. Very friendly staff, thank you.

If you like art, do not miss
This is a lovely art gallery. We did not realise how big it was until we were there in person. We spent two and a half hours there looking at superb artworks. The building itself is very attractive. Entrance is only 1.5 euros per person but does need to be in cash. The ladies on reception did not speak english but I was able to communicate in french! A lot of the art is religious but you cannot avoid marvelling at the skill involved.

    Ideal its long hours
I wasn't sure if I could include it in the three-day visit, but given several factors such as its free availability, its long hours, and the rain in Seville, which was anything but wonderful for us, we decided to spend our last afternoon there. We really like painting, and the truth is that the museum is wonderful, especially the non-sacral part, which is perhaps a bit excessive. But to taste the colors. The building is spectacular, the rooms are well organized, and everyone can choose between the permanent and temporary exhibition whatever they prefer. There were very interesting surprises, to be honest...We loved Zurbarán, of course, but it is not always necessary to see renowned works to equally enjoy art.

    Spanish Baroque painting
I visited the museum on a Friday and there was a small crowd. The collection focuses on Spanish Baroque painting. Due to the time period, the subject matter of the paintings is primarily religious in nature. I remember seeing one painting by El Greco but Murillo is well represented at the museum. A must visit for art lovers.

Worth a visit if you're on a budget.
Not busy at all. None Europeans cost 1.50 euros each. So inexpensive. Lovely building and paintings. Peaceful. Inner gardens are so pretty we say for a while in the sun just enjoying the tranquility of the location.

    Centuries of fabulous art
In a magnificent build dating from the late 1500s that was the Convent of the Order of the Merced Calzada de la Asunción is contained centuries of fabulous art. Beginning with religious works from the 15th century onwards. Powerful pieces, anonymous and otherwise, depict Christ’s passion and Calvary. Lucas Cranach shows a depiction of the latter. A great selection by Murillo is here. Again mostly religiously themed, including Santa Catalina and the Immaculate Conception. A work by Velazquez shows the head of an Apostle. Moving forward by a couple of centuries, we saw fine portraits by the likes of Sanchez and Cordero. Esquivel is well represented with great paintings. Another whose works we hadn’t much seen is Ramos; lovely to see everyday scenes depicted. An engaging and rewarding couple of hours.

    Beautiful courtyard gardens
I only did the ground floor exhibits and the beautiful courtyard gardens. Take a moment to sit and enjoy it as it was meant to in the past. There is a collection of prints which I very much enjoyed as well as the Murillo paintings. Otherwise, Religious art dominated. Extremely reasonable entrance fee of just 1.5 euros for non Europeans.

Not free for UK residents but still a bargain and very interesting
Visited in June 2024 as a couple. Please be advised that for non-eu residents, that is UK residence included, entrance is 1.5 Euros. Eu passport holders may enter for free. However, I wasn't at all disappointed about this as the museum is very big and paying €1.5 is a bargain. There's plenty of paintings to see many of them original. The site itself is quite large and took us about 2 hours to walk around. Plenty of places to sit a nice gardens to relax in in the heat.

    Unexpectedly beautiful
This gallery houses paintings by Murillo and Velasquez, as well as a beautiful Goya and several pleasant paintings by Spanish artists. I loved a last supper, by an anonymous Sevillian, as well as a wonderful Visitation. The additional nice surprise is that admission is free for EU citizens

This museum offers an extraordinary collection of works of art ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, with a special emphasis on the Baroque period and Andalusian art. The museum is housed in a former 17th century convent, the Convento de la Merced Calzada, a building that alone is worth a visit for its architectural beauty. The central cloister, with its lush garden and elegant arches, creates an atmosphere of calm and contemplation that goes perfectly with the artistic experience. The exhibition rooms are spacious and bright, with high ceilings and architectural details that testify to the historical richness of the place. The museum is particularly renowned for its collection of works from the Siglo de Oro (the Spanish Golden Age), with masterpieces by artists such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Francisco de Zurbarán, and Juan de Valdés Leal. The works of Murillo, one of Seville's most celebrated painters, are among the most admired, and the museum houses some of his most iconic creations. In addition to Baroque painting, the museum also boasts a wide range of Renaissance, Gothic and modern works, including sculptures, drawings and ceramics. Entry for EU visitors is free

I came to visit the museum in February as I was very interested in seeing the artwork. However I left without visiting because the staff insisted that I had to leave my small handbag in the locker, and didn't allow me to take our passports and credit cards out of the bag and carry them in hand. I would've left the bag without valuables, but was not allowed.

Rather disappointing treatment and unnecessary. This has left a bitter taste after a lovely few day in Andalusia and put me off visiting anything else in Seville. I am enclosing the photo of the bag in question so you can see the size; sunglasses are there to provide an idea of size.

They have evening hours, so we popped in for a quick visit. I was not wowed by the paintings - a lot of Christian art, and I get saturated by that. But you might like it. The price was right! Since there were no concerts or operas to go to, it was a pleasant enough way to spend some time in the evening.

A free to enter museum with a British passport (at the moment) we were able to wander at leisure through a magnificent exhibition of religious art by one of Sevilles greatest exponent from the 17th Century. The statues were exceedingly lifelike and the paintings were real works of art. Well worth the 2 hours we spent which seemed like half an hour

The medieval and baroque collections offer a wide range of works by painters and sculptors whose reputation has not been neglected. Murillo and many other Sevillian masters, Francisco Pacheco, Zurbaran, Juan de Mesa, Diego Bejarano, Jose Villegas Cordero, Montanes. A "must" for art lovers.

Particularly lovely to visit on a Sunday when there is an art market in the Square outside. Inside there are lots of Murillos, Zurbarans etc There is currently an interesting temporary exhibition of sculptures by Montanes (Spanish baroque). This was very busy.

I don’t think this is the top attraction to see if you have limited time in Sevilla, but I enjoyed the artwork and the building itself is beautiful. I saw complaints about the admission fee- it is only 1.50 € for non-EU residents. For the air conditioning alone, it was well worth it! They did seem overly strict in not allowing drinking water in outdoor courtyards in 100+ F weather and wanting me to check my purse in a locker.

Spent two glorious hours in this very fine museum…full of lovely paintings from late renaissance to late 19th century painters (mostly those that spent time in Seville). Of course, the earlier paintings are full of religious themes (as most painignstign from that period were in Europe) but the pieces from the 19th century, romantic school of painting, also tell you the cultural story of Spain full of lovely bullfightings and flamenco scenery. Incredible collection of Murillo and Zurbaran with a Velasquez, El Greco, Ribera and Sorolla thrown in for good measure. This museum is real hidden gem and not to be missed.

We came here in 2018 and only got to see a small part of the exhibition so to have time to come back and walk around the many delights was a treat. As a teacher of Theology, the vast array of religious art by the Spanish medieval painters such as Murillo and Vargas have me a lot to take in. Lovely to see a lot of Spanish art in context and even some signs in English so very helpful.

This museum is bigger than it looks, but still a lovely size and comparatively charging a pittance for entry. Very well maintained, and I was able to download the app to read the descriptions of paintings in English (many only have Spanish descriptions). You get a good idea of Spanish art from about the 13th century to the modern era. There are fine courtyards to take a break in, with your typical lovely Spanish tile work. A stunning substantial collection of works by Murillo and Zurbaran. Not to be missed by art lovers visiting Seville!

There was no tour on the day I went and, hence or otherwise, this was my only (slightly) disappointing Seville experience. It is surely surprising that a museum said to be second only to the Prado for artistic treasure should have no English translations for the descriptions that go with each painting. The woman at the desk wasn’t particularly helpful and said ‘Spanish only’. I then asked someone more helpful who said there was an app which I downloaded and which worked for the first two rooms before crashing. The helpful person apologised that this couldn’t be fixed before Monday (I went on a Saturday). I was about to leave feeling a little sad when I stumbled upon the Murillo gallery on the ground floor. In an instance all was forgiven! The Murillo paintings are a completely wonderful ‘must see’. They also happen to have English translations so no one need despair if they go on a day when the WiFi is down. So that’s one star for everything up until the Murillo, five stars for the Murillo and three stars overall.
