Max Moreau was a realist Belgian painter who lived from 1902 to 1992. When he died he left his house in the Albayzin to the City of Granada, and his house and workshop are where his museum is now located. The museum shows how houses looked in the past in the Albayzin and how they planted their gardens. This is a very relaxing place to visit and is a window to the past.

This museum is free to visit, though you feel like you want to pay, as it is all presented so nicely and the host is so kind. Paintings and personal objects of Max Moreau and his wife in a beautiful Carmen, just a few meters from my house. I will definitely be a returning visitor!

Max Moreau was a realist Belgian painter who lived between 1902 and 1992. He left his house to the City of Granada when he died. The house and workshop have a garden that is quite pretty. Above the house there is a lookout where one can see the Alhambra clearly. Moreau painted many important people and one of them was Anthony Quinn, and the museum has this portrait.

We visited this museum twice on days it was advertised as open and the notice on the door stated it should be open. Both times it was closed. On the second attempted visit a meeting came to the door and said they were closed, to return the next day. I pointed out we were going home and this was our second attempt. He rudely closed the door in our faces, which was not a pleasant experience in itself on holiday.

Up on the hills above Granada, there is not just the Alhambra. Take your time to visit this lovely little museum that presents the life and work of Max Moreau. The exhibitions are well presented - simply but with flair. And the view over Granada is great of course. This is a lovely place to visit away from the Alhambra crowds.

What a cute little casa/museum!! Very quaint, friendly staff and interesting! I had no idea this artist existed until I visited his house. Free entry too, which is a bonus. Great views of Alhambra. Cute garden!

We made this 'pitstop' part of a visit we planned to various carmens and ended up spending more time here than expected. It is a beautifully maintained residence that once belonged to the Belgian artist, musician and author Max Léon Moreau (1902-1992) and his wife Felice Leclerq. There is a small separate gallery of his works, and more works inside the building that was their home. The view of the Alhambra from their minimalist garden is beautiful. We knew nothing much about him, and the visit gave us an insight into the modern arts in Granada. It was a pleasure to have discovered this spot and a lovely (free) way to spend half an hour.

What a delightful small home of the Belgian Artist Max Moreau. A wee gem of a location with great views, especially from the upper balcony. There is an exhibit of his portraiture works and items furnishing his home. The courtyard and gardens are a pleasure to be in. Thanks to Max Moreau for leaving his property to the people. He has inspired me to keep painting. The caretakers were welcoming and friendly. THANK YOU.
Opening hours were mornings only at the time of my visit so plan wisely - recommend following with lunch nearby at San Miguel Bajo Plaza.

We are in an apartment close by, so wandered in to this tour of the house and gardens that Moreau lived in in Granada. Why wouldn't we-it's free. Very interesting artwork (mostly portraiture), lovely little house, interesting gardens-this is 30-45 minutes well spent. A must-see if you're in the Albayzin district anyways!

If you are visiting Granada, you’ll be going to the Mirador San Nicolas. And if you do that, you should consider half an hour or so in this free museum, which is a couple of minutes away along Camino Nuevo de San Nicolas.
I’d never heard of Max Moreau before visiting this tiny museum. And now that I have looked him up, I can see he is not all that famous. I’m surprised, as his paintings – almost all of them being portraits – are wonderful.
The museum is the home in which he lived his last years (he died in 1992). It is a small “Carmen” (city house with a walled garden) – only about 5 rooms, with a gallery added in the garden. Moreau’s portrait paintings, in the gallery, are breathtakingly good. I’m not a connoisseur or aficionado of portraiture, but I found it impossible not to be mightily impressed – all the more so because the portraits are in several different media.
Much of the house is furnished with Moreau’s furniture and personal effects. Some are interesting – few are explained. Everything is beautifully arranged and designed (it is not “just a house” any more) and is maintained immaculately. However, the information is entirely in Spanish – not a word of any other language. The friendly and cheerful guard – who was the only member of staff – did his best to be helpful, in very broken English.
You can also walk around the small walled garden, but unless (like me) you gawp at ripe pomegranates, oranges, figs and so on it has little to offer.
For free entrance, and given its location, worth seeing.
