- Atiya G4 contributionsWalk up to Sacromonte for a perfectly sized exhibition of las Cuevas and history of gitano flamenco in the area.Best museum I visited so far in Granada. You get to read Alfredo Lombardy’s poems as you enter. And visit the small but perfectly formed and curated exhibitions about the gitano living in las Cuevas, with some history of flamenco.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 12, 2023
- Kelly M37 contributionsGreat little museum with spectacular viewsSo glad we visited this little gem of a museum. Small, but well-kept and detailed exhibits about the Romany (and other) communities that lived in caves in the hills around Granada. The exhibits are housed in former cave houses and stables and almost everything is in both Spanish and English. There are also some exhibits about local wildlife, and the views overlooking the Alhambra and city below are spectacular. There is a small cafe and clean bathrooms are available on site. It was pretty warm the day that we visited, so we took the number 34 bus up to just below the museum rather than try to walk all the way up to it. At the bus stop, it is a short, but steep, walk up the hill to the museum itself. (It was not a problem for us, but I would not try it with a stroller or with anyone who has impaired mobility.) Afterward, we took the same bus to the neighboring town of Albacin for lunch and a bit of souvenir shopping. I agree with other reviewers that I do not understand why this museum is not higher up in the trip advisor rankings. If you can manage the walk up the hill to it, the museum is a great way to learn about the history of the area!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 18, 2024
- Miia K8 contributionsPart of cultural history worth seeingVery nicely arranged piece of cultural history of Spain and other Mediterrian countries. The texts were both in Spanish and in English and the place was worth visiting since the fee was only 5€ per person. We spent there probably 45 minutes.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 17, 2024

The museum is on top of the Sacromonto hill, so not the easiest to reach, but so much worth the effort. There are a dozen or so caves which have been renovated. The caves show different sides of the gypsy life - cooking, weaving, iron works etc and it gives you a good idea of how they lived. It was really interesting to be able to enter the caves and see the size, how they were built etc.
A couple of other caves are used for an exhibition about troglodyte houses around the world and history of flamenco and I liked them both. The troglodyte / underground, cave living exhibition shows different ways to build these settings, differnet types and slides; there is a film as well and it also talks about different settlements around the world and where they can be found. The small history of flamenco exhibition is also interesting.
There is also a little cafe so you can have a drink after the visit. I feel the museum web site doesn't do it justice; looking at the web site I wasn't sure it was worth visiting, but not going would've been such a mistake. Strongly recommended.

You could have just bought tickets at the museum although we purchased online with “Get your guide” It was only £4 each!!
On a previous time we had tried to come by car but it can take too long. Better to catch the 34 bus from Pl Isabel in Granada and is just 6 stops and cost just €1.60. There is then a short uphill walk to the entrance. Lovely people greeted us.The self guided tour was so amazing and so informative about the way the Gypsy community lived, the local geography etc etc. There were QR codes all around which have a commentary in English and Spanish. Plus incredible views over the valley and the whole of the Alhambra which was stunningly beautiful. Amazing value. One of the most cost effective museum visits I have ever done

A very informative, well maintained attraction that should not be missed if you are in Granada. Take the C34 bus from Puerto Nueva up to Sacromonte [ask the bus driver which stop lets you off closest to the Barranco de los Negros. Walk up the hill to the museo entrance. They say it should take an hour but it very easy to spend more time than that going through the exhibits. After your tour of the exhibits and you complete your picture taking of the Alhambra and City Center from this vantage point. Make your way over to Plaza Larga [past Iglesia del Salvador] for lunch or dinner depending on the time of day. Stroll down the hill using the road to the right of the Pastry shop. It a straight shot downhill all the way back to Gram Via de Colon.

Located in the Sacromonte area, the cave museum can be reached by bus or taxi from the Albaicin area. Then there is a 10-15 minute walk up a steep road to the museum entrance. Advanced tickets are available online but not required. You can easily purchase tickets on site for €5. An audio guide is available to download on your phone ahead of time or onsite. But I did not find the audio guide helpful. I got more information from reading the posted placards. The exhibits are staged within former caves and I spent about 40 minutes exploring the museum. There is a small café to sit and order a drink or snack before heading back down to the main road. We combined it with a nearby flamenco show in a cave (see my review). Otherwise I’m not sure if I would have come to see this attraction on it’s own.

This is a small but excellent museum about the traditional cave dwellings of Sacromonte, with further information about the history of Roma people in Spain. Don't be intimidated by the fact that it's not in the middle of Granada; a city bus will take you there in 10 minutes from Plaza Nueva after which it's a short walk up a hill to the museum. You can see the whole museum in under an hour, and finish off with views of Granada and the Alhambra just as good as the ones at St. Nicolas but without the crowds. There are sometimes night performances and films here, though not on the evening we were there -- check the schedule!

I was moved to tears at this museum, and it was absolutely a highlight from our visit to Granada. We walked about 40 minutes in the heat of the summer day, during siesta, to this museum. While the museum is small and intimate, we learned so much. We were two of about 6 total guests we saw during our visit. Museo Cuevas de Sacromonte does a beautiful job demonstrating a way of life, weaving in history and culture and really informed our understanding of Granada overall. I love the way the different caves cover different aspects of life, providing deep insight into various topics inside and out, and culminating at the flamenco cave. Highly recommend.

Very well worth the visit. Excellent explanations about the caves and most importantly the lives of those who dwelled in them. The artefacts and the explanations about life in the caves were very clear. There was also the added value of information about the geology of the region and some excellent audio visual displays. There is a lovely seating area to relax, traditional music was being played and the couple who managed the site were very friendly. And the stunning views..,it couldn’t have got any better. The steep walk is worth the journey, escape the crowds and visit this most unique and interesting museum

Good 1 or 2 hour view of the Sacramonte caves, home of gypsies and flamenco. The museum located in the same caves offers a visit to the past with an audio guide, photos, objects and audiovisual material without including the walk to the place. Beautiful.

This museum is a very carefully curated and moving tribute to the gypsy community of Sacromonte who endured generations of hardship and developed some of Granada's proudest cultural traditions. The museum is arranged into different living and working quarters showing typical objects in a cave home, kitchen, stables and weaving workshop. I really liked the section about the history of flamenco and its multiple cultural influences. This is well-worth the walk up the hill to visit - it's a beautiful museum, and you get bonus views of the Alhambra!

Do you need to make a reservation to see the museum or can you just go in? We hope to visit on June 16, 2019 -Sunday.

Not at all - just show up during the opening hours, buy your entrance tickets and head on in. I checked their website, and for the summer hours(starting March 15th), the site is open from 10 am to 8 pm, every day of the week. Enjoy!
