Hospital Real is the headquarters of the University of Granada. It is a lovely looking building and it's worth a visit just for its architectural valu, if you are close by. The building was established in the early 16th century to treat those who were wounded in the War of Granada. This War was a series of battles between 1482 and 1491, fought between Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile, on the one side, and the Moorish rulers of Granada at the time, on the other side. The Moors were defeated and Granada fell into the hands of the Catholic monarchs, in 1492.

Magnificent building from the 16c as described by others. We chanced upon it and were stunned by its beautiful patios. Even better, the security guard said to look at the biblioteque / library. It is in use and you must keep silence but what an astonishing space. So glad we got there

The Hospital Real is located at Calle Ancha de Capuchinos, 4. It is now the seat of the University of Granada and is beside the Fuente del Triunfo Gardens. This is a huge palace founded by the Catholic Kings in 1504 and built by the architect Juan de Egas. It was used as a hospital to take care of the troops injured during the siege of Granada. In 1536 it was also used as a place to keep mad people. The style of the building is Gothic Plateresque. There are two large and very well kept interior patios and outside there are gardens with statues. The building holds cultural events frequently.

This building is just over 500 years old. Until 50 years ago it still served as a Hospital (The original Purpose) in Granada. It is now the administrative offices for the different universities in Granada. It also houses one of the most important libraries in Spain.
I have been traveling in Spain and Europe as a whole for many years. It is always amazing to me how many of the landmark building, centuries old, are still being used and are in condition to last for many years to come. It was ordered by The Catholic King and Queen Isabel and Fernando. They believed it was one of the Royal responsibilities to look after the health of their subjects. It did not mean free health care for all, but the facility was available for those who could afford it. In the case of this hospital, due to inside information, the original purpose was to care for infectious and mentally unstable. In those cases it was for the good of the kingdom and therefore not chargeable to the patient. For this reason it was also built outside what was then the walls of the city. Not far from the Puerto Elvira. It is located just behind what is now the Plaza of Victory just behind the beautiful fountains.
There are guided tours of the facility and it is well worth the time. The building also hosts free cultural public events in the main hallways which are immense, the building is also available after hours for private hire to events.
All in All a stunning building.

If you are travelling in from the bus station and have the time it is worth dropping of a Triunfo and walking up past the fountains into the Hospital Real, a great grand building still in daily use. The library on the first floor is a huge space set out in a cross with a copula in the centre above the librarians, students were busy studying in areas of the library. It is the building here that is the star it speaks for itself. and afterwards it a nice reasonable walk into the centre of Granada.

We stumbled on this ancient and beautiful building while walking in the old districts of Granada. The architecture is fantastic and dates from 1490 and has been restored.

This historic building, commissioned by Queen Isabela in the 1490s has been restored and remodeled keeping it as authentic as possible. The main floor has been turned into exhibition space and there was a great Darwin exhibition while we were there. The real Masterpiece however is the second floor, it now houses one of the University Libraries but it is open to the public . It is a breathtaking space with flooor to ceiling wooden bookcases filled with manuscripts and books of all kinds. The ceiling is all the original inlaid wood with a beautiful cupola in the center to let in natural light. There is always some kind of exhibition in the library as well, while we were there it was highlighting the evolution of medical techniques and equipment f or the hearing and speech impaired, Incredible!
