This church is attached to the Cathedral of Granada. It was built in 1704 on the site of the old Aljama Mosque of the city.

The church has a Greek cross-floor plan. The interior with a high cupola is stunning although it is not as striking as in the Cathedral next door.

My wife and I visited the Iglesia del Sagrario because we prefer not to pay to go into churches. It is adjacent to the Granada Cathedral and is free to enter. It is impressive and has a beautiful interior although the exterior is rather plain.

It is one of the most interesting baroque buildings in the city. Unfortunately, its location occupied the space of what was the main mosque of Granada, which is why it has not survived to this day.

Although in principle the space was going to be used as the cloister of the Cathedral within the design of Diego de Siloé, its construction did not begin until the 18th century and a temple adjacent to the Cathedral was chosen.

Walking in the late afternoon sun down to Granada, I know that the cathedral would be closed but here at Parroquia del Sagrario [Parish Tabernacle] there was a service on and I discreetly joined in. It was both solemn and uplifting aided, no doubt, by the immense Baroque structure around me. Seeing Granada Cathedral and the Capilla Real the day afterwards might have driven it from my mind but not so as it an impressive structure in its own right. The photos I took of the cathedral plan show how the “Iglesia Parroquial del Sagrario” (built in the early C18th) is positioned in the top left of the plan. It is quite large – even allowing for the cathedral next door and this is emphasised by the height of the cruciform structure of the church. The plasterwork is wonderful and no more brilliant than in the naturally-lit dome at the centre of the Greek cross. The entry was free as this was a service and afterwards I wandered around and took in the works of art and the highly decorated altars. The organ at the west end looks impressive with its ‘trompeta real’ pipes. Very much worth seeing if you have the time.

Regrettably we didn't have a lot of time to visit this church, but from what we saw, it was very nice, with its own unique characteristics. Worth a visit.

The Tabernacle church is fairly plain on the outside, but inside it has wonderful baroque architecture, beautiful altars and paintings. It is definitely worth a visit.

Wandered into this church sort of by mistake mid day on a Saturday and there was a wedding going on with many well dressed guests. The bride's mother even wore a traditional mantilla and peineta. We took a seat in the back but many tourists milled around and in and out through the whole ceremony, which was a little strange. Anyway, the church is beautiful and after the bride and all departed we saw a mother going in with a baby dressed for a christening. Just another Saturday at this busy, beautiful church.

Situated next to Granada Cathedral, the Iglesia del Sagrario (Church of the Tabernacle) is often overlooked. However, it is a wonderful church and deserves a visit. Built in the Baroque style, the interior is dazzling in its beauty.

Next to the Cathedral of Granada we find this other church which has nothing to envy of many other Spanish churches, especially the decorations of the vaults!
