Typical busy plaza full of people and energy. Restaurants galore. Crossed through here as we descended the road/pathway from Alhambra. There were some street performers there including a group doing Flaminco dancing. We generally avoid places like this to eat since they are more expensive and the food generally not as good. Nice though if you just want a quick desert and coffee to people watch. Enjoy.

It is one of the nerve centers for visitors to the city. Several of the most interesting tourist routes start from here. The square is presided over in a monumental way by the Palacio de la Chancillería, an emblematic Mannerist work of Granada.

We took a trip to Granada from Malaga and after visiting the main sights we wandered in the centre. We found this nice square , where the building of the Royal Chancellery stands. Music was playing while a few couple were dancing tango, walcer or Flamenco. It was great!

Despite its name Plaza Nueva (New Square), it is a very old square. It spreads over the Darro River. From the square starts the Carrera del Darro which is a narrow beautiful riverside street.
From Plaza Nueva, you can walk up to the Alhambra. From the square starts also the lively narrow street Calle Elvira.
Around the square are several important buildings such as the Royal Chancellery and the House of Pisa.
You can sit on one of the many terraces to eat or have drinks after sightseeing.

Plaza Nueva is a large central square in the heart of the old city. It is an excellent starting point for exploring Granada on foot.
From here, you can walk through the Puerta Granadas and up through the Alhambra forests to the Alhambra itself (20 min).
If you take the narrow cobbled road to the left of the Church of St Ana, you can walk the Carrera del Darro, a scenic walk following the historic 17th century road along the bank of the Darro river.
Alternately, head up Calle Elvira and make your way uphill past San Gregorio’s to the Mirador San Nicolas and into the heart of the Albaicín area.
We did all three. Granada is a brilliant city for walking and exploring and we were very glad in the planning stage that we allocated 3 days here although really, we could have easily had more time.
The plaza itself was constructed in the 1500s by the Christians when they conquered Granada and started rebuilding the city on a Western model. Over the centuries, the plaza has been the centre for everything from bull fights to public executions. Today two points of interest are the Royal Chancellery (now the Court House) and the Church of San Ana, built in 1501.

You will almost definitely cross this plaza several times if you stay in the city and walk anywhere. Decent cafes, access to Alhambra, Albaicin. We saw some dancing on Saturday night and what appeared to be a never ending stream of glamorous wedding at the Church of Santa Ana.

Plaza Nuevo was smaller than I thought. Easy to handle. A fountain in the middle surrounded by small shops, cafe, tapas bars, restaurants, smoke parlours... on 4 sides, a few bus stops close by.
Just right next to it; Plaza de Santa Ana and town hall.
My hotel was across the street, directly opposite. I was in and out several times a day. Never need to worry about getting lost too much after a couple of beers & tapas down stairs or around.
I first notice Plaza Nueva's glory was in one late afternoon when the soft sun glow transformed the whole area, some devoted flamenco dancers came on scene with their passionate live music and live performance. Wow! So intense. So powerful. The energy produced was so raw and uplifting. I simply couldn't tear myself away.
The Plaza became my favour chilled out spot for the rest few evenings in Granada.
The flamenco dancers performed every second day alternated dates with a couple gypsy singer. A very fond memories of Granada.❤️

Despite its rather modern appearance, the pentagonal New square is part of The albaicín quarter. The architectural and historical centerpiece of the square is the Andalusian High court building, formerly Real Chancillería, built from 1531 to 1587 in the Mannerist style. The development of the square that covered the former Darro river embankment took place simultaneously with the construction of Real Chancillería. The flow of gold and silver from the Incas and Aztecs made it possible to Finance other projects. The square received a second wind in the XIX century, when Granada became the center of the Spanish sugar industry. Most of the classicist buildings were built on the square at that time.

The Plaza Nueva is the oldest (what's in a name) square in Granada.
The square was built to create space and to cover the Rio Darro river; which now flows underneath the square.
At the time it was a popular square for bullfighting and public executions.
Nowadays the square is centrally located between the newer center and the route up towards the Albaicin district via the Carrera del Darro (beautiful walking route along the Darro river) and the Paseo de los Tristes.
You'll find many bars and restaurants on and around the square.
On one side of the square is the Royal Chancellery or Real Chancillería.
On the east side, the square becomes the Plaza de Santa Ana. Adjacent to this square is the church with the same name.

We love history and this plaza is one of those that have some hidden secrets! Plaza Nueva, which is not very new, but in fact is the oldest of Granada's public squares, has had a very interesting past. The space occupied by the plaza is in fact part of a river which now actually runs underneath, and so there is a lot more space for the square to be used by people. In older days tournaments, bullfights, even public executions used to be held in the plaza. The so-called Royal Chancellery, built in the 16th century, is located on one side of the plaza, and behind it there was a prison which was in use until the end of the 19th century! But today that building houses the High Court. And further away you will find the Iglesia de San Gil y Santa Ana which in fact is on a part of the square called Plaza de Santa Ana. And of course you can absorb all the history whilst waiting for your tour to start, or relaxing for a while and having a coffee at one of the many cafes and other eateries in the area. We stopped in Plaza Nueva before walking on and visiting the Alhambra a short walk up the road.

Where is the best place to park a car for a days visit.
Written March 20, 2018
We drove up from the coast just for one day in Granada & parked in an underground car park quite close to the new shopping mall.
It was about a 10 minute walk up to the central area of Granada.
The car park was pay as you leave & although we were parked for about 7 hours the charge was very reasonable for a city......think less than €20 although I can’t remember exactly.
Be wary of trying to drive too far into the centre of Granada as there are restrictive zones with cameras that monitor vehicles & issue fines via number plate recognition.
Sorry I can’t be more specific re the location but the car park was well signed.
