About
It was commissioned by Queen Isabella on the site of the Main Mosque, which later on became the Santa María de la O Church. It was designed by Enrique Egas but was modified according the Renaissance style of Diego de Siloé. The construction works started at the beginning of the 16th century. It turned out to be a Spanish Renaissance masterpiece, praised by writers and historians. Its exterior structure is Gothic. The main facade was designed by Alonso Cano. The inside of the church is Renaissance on a Gothic floor plan, with chapels at the sides and a main chapel, a masterpiece by Siloé. The Cathedral treasure is kept in what used to be the Chapter Room. Today it holds ornaments and priceless treasures.

- TIGGERCastellNeddWales, United Kingdom43 contributionsAmazing organVisit cathedral before the Basilica. The organ here is amazing as is the alter and the surrounding chapels. The rest of the cathedral although grand in stature is quite grey which the Basilica isn’t. They are in walking distance to each other.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2023
- RjessMMMVancouver, Washington561 contributionsSpecial place of worshipAnother wonderful cathedral to visit when you visit Granada. There was a nominal fee to get in and wander around. You can download the audio guide which was very informative. What surprised me the most was the size of the pillars which were enormous. Would just take it all in leisurely as you enjoy the solitude of being in an incredible cathedral. Would definitely return in the future. Enjoy.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 9, 2023
- K72Melbourne, Australia3,075 contributionsBaroque styleFree to enter, the baroque style cathedral is worth a short visit. The ceiling is quite nice and space inside the church is also interesting. Cathedral is next to the royal chapel which houses tombs, coffins and very old religious artwork!Visited December 2023Traveled with friendsWritten January 8, 2024
- 🌈🌈❤️happyopenmindedtraveler❤️🌈🌈The Netherlands401,620 contributionsImpressive!!!During our recent stay in Torremolinos in january 2024, we made an excursion to Granada via our dutch tour operator (via a touring bus with local guides). Before visiting Fort Alhambra in the afternoon, we stopped in Granada for a few hours. We were glad we went inside this huge cathedral to have a good look. There was free wifi as well. It was definitely worth the 5 euros per person entrance fee. Recommended✌✌✌✌✌Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 31, 2024
- Sarah E174 contributionsBeautiful cathedralBeautiful cathedral. Clearly an important part of Granada’s history and its citizens faith. Beautiful artwork and statues however as an atheist living in a society on its knees from the cost of living, charging people entry given the sheer wealth inside, is so utterly distasteful frankly.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 2, 2024
- jingalCrawley, United Kingdom94 contributionsWell worth a visitThe cathedral is well worth a visit, and the small entry fee (6€). Use the free wifi and download the audio tour on your phone, it is well worth doing as it adds so much to the experience. There is a good amount to see and just for once a church that is light and bright, so you can see everything without having to squint, which make for a more enjoyable experience.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 2, 2024
- Graham J58 contributionsNot to be missed, especially the medieval choir booksThis cathedral is quite phenomenal inside, a real surprise because its exterior is not impressive at all. Inside there is a wonderfully designed space, surrounded by an impresssive range of religious alcoves. Phenomenal exhibition of large decorated medieval choir books.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024
- R K LSeattle, Washington3,777 contributionsShowy glitter and expensive decor...The Granada Cathedral was definitely worth the time and expense to experience, even without all the local tour guides and brochures hyping it. The significance of it being the first church built in Spain after Granada was recaptured from the Muslims, and on the exact location where the Great Mosque of Granada had stood, made the Cathedral a must-see monument. As cathedrals go, we were not overly impressed with all the showy glitter and expensive decor because every cathedral we have visited worldwide has had some claim to fame in this regard. However, there were some stunning works of art, the structure itself was massive and, of course, let us not overlook the famous occupants in the Royal Chapel.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 9, 2024

Like so many other historical churches in Europe, it is definitely worth the trip to see such a beautiful site. Even though the famous Seville Gothic Cathedral is beautiful, I feel this intimate Cathedral is more stunning inside. If you are into photography, you will love this. I realized on my trip that my Sony RX 100 version 2 took very good outside photos and had a good sensor but I think a very good I Phone camera or smart phone takes much better inside low light photos; which is important. I merge all the photos to do my Photoshop later and get the best outcome. Leave your camera with large lenses home on the trip as you won`t need the lens and you lose way too much light using a big lens. Never use a flash but the newest phones takes excellent low light photos.

The "Santa Iglesia Catedral Metropolitana de la Encarnación de Granada", or simply, the "Catedral de Granada", was built atop the very site of the old city's medina. With the "Reconquista" and the consequent fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Al-Andalus, the construction started in 1518 and continued for over 181 years. Just amazing! Some of the most famous and recognized Spanish architects worked on its project, with renaissance, baroque and plateresque elements. The result is the overwhelming "Catedral de Granada"! Please check its visiting hours before going. Entry fee at E$5 and free on Sundays. Unmissable! Enjoy!

Breathtaking in it's in-your-face decor this is a must for those who appreciate Baroque architecture and design. There is not a square inch that isn't covered in gold leaf, cherubs, icons, paintings, carvings etc. Not for Modernists that's for sure.

Huge and monumental and grand for certain and well served with an audio guide for the very reasonable 5 Euro adult admission. I am afraid that after a while though all the ornate decoration and over-the-top display of wealth and power just become a bit much for me. I'm very glad I visited but 30 minutes and about half the audio guide and I was at my limit.

The Granada Cathedral is a spectacular sight! It's big on the outside. It's even bigger on the inside! And the architecture is also magnificent. Unlike other cathedrals which are built in the usual gothic style, this one was constructed in the so-called Spanish Renaissance style. It's a really beautiful building. We were lucky to go inside at a time when there was a service taking place. We were not able to take many photos but managed to get some! This is a sight which should not be missed. It's in the centre of the city with green spaces, many shops, cafes and restaurants all around.

Fabulous building with lots to see. The audio guide however is overly complex . Extreme detail of painters and saints we had never heard of . Could have been far more enlightening with less details .!

Right in the centre of the city, a must see. Impressive architecture and statues inside. Only 5 pounds entrance fee, I also suggest purchasing the audioguide for the best experience. Worth spending a couple of hours inside.

Magnificent and charismatic building in central Granada. 6 Euros to enter, there's lots of amazing architecture to take in. In truth, religious artefacts abound in this vast site. While its impressive exterior features such as the spires and towers lift upwards into Granada’s skyline, it is within where the building truly shines. Its numerous awe-inspiring elements make this a must for anyone visiting the city. My wife and I visited the cathedral as part of a larger guided tour and found the experience delightful.

I would expect the cathedral in any city to be the most beautiful religious building in that city, not so in Granada. This is a big building, impressive externally and when you enter with massive pillars seemingly everywhere. It does have some impressive side altars and the main altar was beautiful. But I'd just been spoiled earlier in the day, still in Granada, by two of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen and this just didn't live up to those. I’m not sure I should add this as encouraging visitors to other locations could spoil them but far far better internally, within 600 metres, are the phenomenal Basilica de San Juan de Jesus and Real Monasterio de San Jeronimo.

It's been about a decade since I visited the Granada Cathedral and the previous time it was completely under scaffolding for some much needed cleanup. What a difference a decade makes!
Arriving at the cathedral is always a treat, traveling through one of Granada's many narrow walkways and then encountering the cathedral rising up from the earth in an almost magical way. The cathedral has been restored immaculately and is an incredible reminder of its grand past...one cannot help but be drawn into its history with each turn. It's easy to see that Granada played an important part of Spain's history.
Do not miss the Granada Cathedral on your next visit to Granada. The Alhambra is not the only game in town anymore.

Cual es la ventaja de sacar la entrada con anticipacion? porque veo que tiene una recargo de gestion. Vale la pena?

Puede pasar que cuando llegues el cupo esté cubierto y no puedas entrar. Es un lugar muy concurrido.

how do you book entrance ticket in advance? I'm not talking about getting tickets by booking thru one of the guided tours & such. but just buying tickets in advance from the church's website ? there doesn't seem to be one? thanks
Written November 29, 2019
We just bought the tickets there. Very short line. Not sure if you can by them in advance
