We were met near our hotel in Granada by our driver Pablo who took us on a lovely drive through the countryside to an olive grove. We were then met by our guide Beatrice who was more enthusiastic than one could ever imagine about olives.
We learnt how olives are grown (including eating one straight from the tree), how olive oil is made and we visited a perfectly preserved olive mill that is hundreds of years old. Then came the tasting. The idea of drinking olive oil directly seems mad, however with good olive oil this is a rather pleasant experience. However bread is also available if you don want to partake in a marathon drinking session!
We also chose the wine tasting option where we tasted two wines and two sherries along with some tapas (and more wonderful bread and olive oil)
After all this, we then went to lunch in a neighbouring village. The three course lunch was quite mediocre (especially compared to what we just had) and not really necessary after all the bread and tapas that we had already consumed.
The trip finished with a nice drive back to Granada through Lecrin Valley with chances to stop for photos (and in our case to eat oranges directly from orange trees)
I fully recommend this tour as it is quite unique, but would suggest taking the 3hr option and spend the money saved in a nice tapas bar in Granada.

My sister and I loved this tour. We learned to appreciate more the making of olive oil. The samplings were delicious, our guide was very knowledgeable and an overall great experience. I highly recommend it!

My husband and I are hazelnut farmers in Washington state. This was so much fun because we could compare olive growing and processing to that of hazelnuts. The tour of the orchard, the old time processing plant, and then getting to taste test oils was fantastic. There was a shuttle to and from Granada, which was slick. The availability of gluten free bread was an added bonus. Our tour guide, Violeta, was knowledgeable and friendly. The perfect combo for a tour guide.

The tour was informative and the oils were vey good. They offered a wine tasting as well for an extra €20 this was nothing short of a way of squeezing money out of you. The olive oil part was good value at €38 others wanted 43 euro for the same tour and the same guide so be careful

Fantastic tour with 3 other couples (American, we are from UK), and our guide drove us to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada to see the olive groves (we went in June - not harvest season), also almond groves - our tour guide was knowledgeable, easy going and friendly, and she took us to an old mill - the highlight was the blind tasting of various olive oils, and without wanting to spoil it, I learnt so much about olive oil - and I have a new found love for it, they also sell olive oil and and olive oil based products, so bring some cash - if you are gluten free, bring some gluten free bread - that was a regret for me at the tasting! Worth the money, definitely go!

Thank you very much for your nice comments! We can provide gluten free bread during the tasting. Gluten free is not available at our village so we need to know in advance in order to get it. Just tell us when you book through our web form or by telephone.

This is one of those reviews that is a bit difficult to write.
On one hand - all the nice things people say about the tour are technically true, the tour is indeed enjoyable and the guide very nice.
On the other - for 38 euros, one would expect a bit more than watching a 10 minute movie about olive oil making process.
Yes, there is a short stop along a road with olive trees on both sides. Yes, an old olive mill visit (2e ticket if you'd visit by yourself) is included. And yes, all is followed by tasting of 5 different types of olive oil with interesting explanations...
Simply be aware that if you watched any "How do they make it?" videos about olive oil e.g. on YouTube, you will not learn or see much new on this tour.
And that is a real pity, since the potential is clearly there: this is "the" area for olive oil producers in Spain, so visiting a real olive estate, talking with the owners, checking the equipment they use, setting the olive tasting in their barn... things like this would make the tour... well, if not unique, then at least more "money worth" and similar to this type of tours to vineyards, cognac makers, breweries - you name it.
But since majority of participants (perhaps those who prefer emotions to a cold analytical mind of an engineer) seem to overwhelmingly enjoy the tour, don't mind the price/value ratio and universally rate the experience with 5 stars - if everybody's happy, there is nothing wrong with it.
On a side note: What must be absolutely respected and admired though is the business idea behind the tour itself - no doubt somebody ingeniously identified an interesting niche in tourist interests that are ignored by other agencies in Granada and created a viable business with next-to-nothing running costs...

Dear Mr. Vj,
Thank you very much for your review. Our tour is designed to have a general but complete introduction into the olive oil world in Andalusia.
That is why we present the most common situation, many small-scale olive producers growing local varieties and extracting at a local cooperative. The choice of tasting 5 olive oils from different producers around Andalusia is to have a broad idea about the flavors and the differences among the olive oils produced.
The extraction process in the industrial production of olive oil occurs only during a few days per year, and it is a very intensive. This moment is not only very stressful for producers but also the conditions are hard (noise, smell, and food safety regulations to ensure hygiene and other security measures, etc.), that is why we prefer to show this part with a video.
We definitively think emotion is the best way to approach the olive oil, like wine, that is the most valuable experience for most of the people!
Concerning the price, we think it is very fair. The information you find on our website and brochures is exactly what we offer. The tour includes transportation, visits to the olive trees and an XV century mill, a very carefully designed tasting of a selection of premium extra virgin olive oils, and of course, a very professional English speaking guide during the tour.
Best regards,
David Carrillo

This past June while on vacation in Granada, Spain, we came across an OliveOilTour brochure at the place we were staying. On a whim, we signed up. Coincidentally, we've been utilizing more quality olive oil in our cooking and diet. This tour dramatically expanded our knowledge of the product - from how it's made, the different types and flavors as well as best uses. Beatriz was our guide and she was both very personable and knowledgeable. The 15th century olive press in the hillside town of Nigueles, and presentation on how oil was made back in the day was very interesting - a lot of HARD work. The tasting itself was quite enjoyable, especially accompanied by the additional wine tasting! We were so impressed, we purchased two types of oil - one from Cordoba and the other from Granada/Andalucia, as well as a few other olive oil based products. This business was also able to ship the items to us in the States, which we just received two days ago and right on time. All in all, this is a very worthwhile side tour and one we'd highly recommend - olive oil is big business in Spain and Andalucia.

Being a foodie I was expecting it to be a more technical and informative visit for the cost of 50 euros each, usually 55 we drove to the village. We took the 6 hours tour way too expensive for what you get. which included a very basic 3 course lunch of gaspacho soup, fish served with a no taste potato and a side of half grilled tomato, the dessert was very good, consisting of a flan right out of the oven at the local restaurant of Niguelas .
The afternoon visit: a ride in a small van to the next town of Megelis was pretty nice having not seen oranges groves before. If you have a car you can easily drive the Lecrin valley on your own and go to Priego de Cordoba for a visit of Olive groves.

Last week we were in Granada. We had our tickets to the Alhambra for the next day and were interested in what else the city had to offer. On the trian to Granada we saw tons of Olive trees and were talking about how cool it would be to learn about how they make it. At our Hotel we found a brochure and called. They were so great, they fit us in that day. They picked us up from our hotel brought us out to a quaint town, we saw the groves, saw the old ways they used to press the olive oil, learned about the way they do it now and then had a official tasting...just like wine, smell, swirl, sip then dip. We learned about the differences in Olive oil and afterwards we had the opportunity to buy the local oil in tasting or cosmetic form. what a great afternoon....A must if you are in Granada!!!

I would definitely not recommend this to anyone going to Granada. I happen to love olives and olive oil and was very interested in how olive oil is made but the overall experience was a let down. We were picked up from the hotel and driven to a little town where we were walked through an olive orchard and told a little bit about how the trees were owned by locals. We then went and looked at the old process for making olive oil and how the olives were crushed and the juice separated and then were taken to another place and shown a video on how olive oil is made now. We were given 5 cups of olive oil for tasting, and while it was interesting to learn about the different tastes that olive oils can have, I still expected more, and the fact that we ran out of bread silly things like that, showed a lack of planning on their part.
We opted in for a lunch, though I would really recommend that people not do this. We went to a large restaurant, which was completely empty and I had a fish soup (which was good) followed by a dish with 3 different meats (only one of which was edible) and french fries. My friends were given potatoes that were probably soaked in olive oil for days (and thus were simply too much!)

We will be staying in Marbella. Is this tour for us?

I loved this olive oil tour and learned so much. Our tour guide picked us up from our hotel and drove us to the destination. The tour is outside of the city of Grenada. It really just depends how much you want to travel. I will tell you the olive oil you will sample is amazing! I have ordered 2 more cases and had it shipped back to the United States. You won’t be disappointed.

Is it worth visiting the olive orchards in November or is it too late in the year. How should we dress?
Written November 11, 2016
November is a very nice time to visit olive orchards because olives turn from green to violet to black and you can see the three stages of ripeness on the tree at the same time. It is also when the best extra virgin olive oils are extracted. The weather is constantly changing, we recommend checking the forecast the day before. You don t need any especial clothes or shoes to do the tour, only warm clothes … the time spent outside at the olive groves is around 15 to 20 minutes so bring a rain coat or umbrella if the forecast predicts rain.
Kind regards,
