Arrived late in the day, having seen it in the distance and not known what it was. Fascinating story of fake documents ( ‘lead books’) which when revealed as fake, led to the halting of the massive building project. Find the holy caves where a saint was said to have been martyred. Excellent viewpoint outside

Having walked up through the Arab quarter we decided to carry on to Sacromonte. The final climb up to the abbey was very steep. Late on a sunny April afternoon we managed it, but I wouldn't recommend it in July or August unless you are young and fit! We arrived at 5.15pm and luckily the guide let us join the 5pm tour as they had just come out of the library into the cloisters. We were then able to join the 5.45pm tour to see the library, before being shown the way out. The guide spoke both in Spanish and in English. We saw several buses on the walk back down, but didn't notice a bus stop at the top! Fabulous views.

I have been visiting Granada, Spain each summer for the past 12 years and thought I had seen it all. But there is so much to explore and this past summer found me at the Sacomonte Abbey.

The Abbey is a delightful structure just a short drive from the center of Granada. Already a great place to visit, the Abbey is in the process of a major expansion to add a first-class visitors facility for exhibits and events to increase interest in this historic sight.

I highly recommend a visit to Sacromonte Abbey!

Unless you enjoy religious legends, skip the tour and go for the view. It’s pleasant to walk around and look down on Granada and the Alhambra. I had hoped to learn about how the monks lived here, but the tour was mainly about the legends, the relics, and the founders of the abbey after the Reconquista. Unfortunately I was with a Spanish tour group that was very interested in all the minutiae, so the guide must have gone into extra detail because our tour lasted more than an hour. Way more than I needed to see a few rooms and the caves, which again were not of much interest unless you like legends about saints.
The Sacromonte area where real people lived and still live is more interesting to me because I prefer a slice of life where I get a little glimpse of the past. But that’s just me.
Note: if you take the bus to come here, you catch the return bus in the exact same spot and going the same direction — away from Granada. The bus continues into the little village, then loops around in the valley and rejoins the road further towards Granada. The bus does not return to the abbey going the opposite direction. So, be sure to note where you got off the bus. There is a bus sign at that spot.

This is a bit off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. Recommend getting the C2 bus from Plaza Nueva as it goes right to the abbey. It’s within walking distance of the town, but a very steep climb. Not for the faint heart- especially in the heat of summer! When you get there, it’s worth doing the tour of the small museum, the church and the caves. And there’s no beating the fantastic views of Granada and the Alhambra. Really enjoyed our visit.

Its an uphill hike to get here... Important to know that the tour inside the abby is only in Spanish and so non-Spanish speakers miss quite a bit of info. Entrance is 4€ (it doesn't say so at the door). The visit is short (about 30 min.) and feels a bit rushed. The view is beautiful and the place is interesting but if they had an English language tour it would have made a big difference. Lastly, occasional buses from Plaza Nueva go all the way up the hill and make sense to seek on hot days. Bottom line: nice but not a must.

The walk up to the abbey through the Sacromonte area is attractive and scenic but steep.
The abbey does guided tours for €,4 per person so don't pay an arm and a leg for your own tour.
The abbey is interesting, particularly the underground caves, and the cloisters beautifully cool and peaceful.

Quite hard to find but well worth it!! A hidden gem, with great views and very interesting history dating back to the Roman times. Fascinating to see the caves and the treasures that were found in them. Kids enjoyed walking through the caves and the books and artefacts dating back to the 12th Century were incredible.

Interesting visit to this abbey. The tour is self-guided and you download it on to your phone via a QR code. You can visit the XVII century abbey as well as the caves underneath which were important to Christianity in the Granada area. Open 10.30-2.00 and 4.00-5.30 when we visited but check opening times. There is a bus that takes you up there but we took a taxi and then walked back through Sacromonte - it would be a long, hot walk up there.

The abbey is pleasant quiet place. You can learn here about its importance to christianity in Granada area, both in the ancient history and the current times. Listen crefully to any mention of the "Lead Books", it explains you a lot. E.g. why are ther so many Stars of David? You can also enjoy both traditional and modern christianity inspired artworks as well.

At the time of our visit the place was opend since 10.00 to 14.00 and then since 15.30 to 19.00. Tours are self-guided, you can download the audioguide, but be aware - inside the abbey there is almost none mobile data signal and the local free wifi works just in a +/- 5 m petrimeter of the ticket office, then weaknes rapidly.
