We spent a day in Malaga during Santa Semana (Holy Week) and enjoyed a special spiritual moment during our visit to the Church of San Juan Bautista. We had just finished dinner at Terra Mia (see our review) and noticed the church was open much later than expected. We went inside and were greeted by the site of hundreds of people taking part in a religious ceremony celebrating Holy Week with song, incense and faith. The interior of the Church was lit by candlelight. The faithful were joined around one of the famous tronos carried during the parades and singing. We were fortunate to take part in such a moving ceremony. For those wishing to visit outside of Holy Week, the Church is just as moving and beautiful throughout the rest of the year.

San Juan Bautista church.
After you have seen the church of Santa Maria de Jesus and the Virgen del Socorro Chapel, you have to walk down the street “Cuesta Real for about 250 meters to reach the San Juan Bautista church who is on your right and also dates from the 17th century, this one also was unfortunately closed during the moment of our visit, so that we were not able to see the interior who seems to be very important as the church and hospital is mentioned as an architectural example from this century.

The San Juan Batista church is almost inconspicuously located in the narrow Calle San Juan, but is one of the four Catholic churches that was founded after the conquest of the city by the Spanish kings in the 16th century.
The church was originally built with a gothic central nave with Moorish arches and pillars. However, not long after the construction was completed, the center ship was already extended and took its current shape.
The church itself is worth a visit, especially because of the magnificent altar and beautiful chapels.
We were here on Good Friday, so a number of thrones from the processions set up here in the church made the visit very special.
Normally the church is open daily in the morning until 1 PM and in the evening between 6 and 8 PM.
Admission is free, but of coyrse a small donation is appreciated.

The Church of San Juan Bautista (Iglesia de San Juan Bautista) was one of the four churches Catholic Monarchs, located in the middle old town the city Malaga. The Church was built in the late fifteenth century in a Gothic architectural style. One of the peculiarities of the church is its tower, very nice tower, free entry.

Built and reconstructed through centuries dating back to 1487 - the times Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Kings) conquered Malaga. It has very unusual exterior murals from 18th century. The interior of the church is also impressive, including the richly decorated altar. This church is rather unknown but worth a visit.

Tucked into a shopping area, this church has a stunning interior that deserves a visit. Opening hours limited . Inside the roof is spectacular and worth a visit alone.

Walking down the alleyways of the historic quarter we literally stumbled upon this beautiful small church, the interior is simply stunning, so well cared for, and entry is free.

A place of peace in an otherwise hectic city, murals, altars, very ornate, free entrance so you can wander round at your own pace.

One of the oldest churches in Malaga (XV th century) with a lot of history and still being used as a parrish church ! Like many other churches in Malaga , it is hard to find but worth the effort ! It is beautiful inside as the decoration is very rich !

Hello! I would like to know whether
1) 8th September in Spain is a public feast? In Malta we have a feast for Nativity of Our Lady.
2) At what time is mass celebrated on Saturday and Sunday please?
Thanks and regards
