Lovely place

We found this place after a pleasant walk along the promenade from our resort. It is set in a lovely civic park by the beach. There are some Roman remains and a small fountain nearby. A very pleasant spot.

A historic tower
Jan 2019 • Couples
This is the best conserved of all the Estepona Watchtowers, and the one in the prettiest position, surrounded as it is by lawns and gardens on an up-market residential estate.

It has a number of names: Torre Vigía de Guadalmansa, Torre Mocha, Torre de Gualmaza, Torre de Guadalmaza and Torre del Xaral.

It is unusual in that it is square, not round. The round shape is better for defence, as it cannot be so easily destroyed by cannonballs which can knock off a corner of a square tower.

However, the base, right up to the high entrance door, (the soldiers had to get in and out by rope) is constructed of solid stone, with no rooms inside, making it stronger against attack.

Despite the faint outline still visible of a red Cruz Potenzada - a cross with a bar across each arm, also called a potent cross, a symbol of the Crusades - it may be that the tower was originally built not by Christians to defend their lands against the marauding Moors from the Barbary Coast (modern-day Morocco), but by Moorish settlers themselves to defend their farmland from their cousins and neighbours. We must remember that this part of Spain was under Moorish rule for over 700 years, from 711 to 1492.

It's a pity that there isn't a big information plaque here, to give us more details of the fascinating history of this attractive tower.

Very nice public park by the sea with sunbeds and seats.

This torre is just part of some archaelogical discoverys in the park, but the main reason to go there is because it's a very nice spacious green space bordering the Guadalmansa paseo maritima which now stretches for some kilometres along the coast. There are seats and sunbeds available to just sit and enjoy the view of the sea and the coastline West to Gibraltar.

A relaxing place for a walk.

The Torre is just part of the archaological excavations in a pleasant grassy park in the heart of Guadalmansa Playa. I don't consider it worth making a journey especially to see it but if you live in the area or are visiting Tikitano restaurant it's a pleasant park to have a stroll in. There is also a short paseo maritimo to walk along beside the sea which is very quiet and unspoiled.

Very pleasant

This is not were the marker is the map but closer to estapona. It is in a nice park area next to the sea surrounded by a standard spainish modern development. If you didn't know better you could think it had been built as an object d'art, thankfully there is a board to inform you why it exists. It is unusual as most of these towers you find on the coast as circular, this being square. Pleased I found it.
