Only in 1995 and on the site of a former theatre was this treasure of archaeology discovered. It’s a marvellous legacy from the lengthy duration of the Roman presence.
Surmised to be established in the 1st century BCE and impressively was in operation till the advent of the 5th C of the CE.

If interested in Cadiz and its history then this place plus the nearby Yacimiento Arqueologico Gadir (high up the list of things to see on Trip Advisor) is a must. It is so interesting also to appreciate the original island nature of this part of the old city which was divided by a stretch of water between the Bay and La Caleta. The Romans loved their salted fish transported to Rome by vessels taking over a week. The fish paste Garum was also used a lot in those days.

Went here on a very rainy day in February There are specific times of the day when they conduct a tour around the site. Worth checking the times before you go, so as not to be disappointed. It turned out it I was there with just one other visitor, but the lady who took us around was excellent, full of enthusiasm, speaking in English to me and Spanish to the other guest. The slot of time lasts about an hour, but it is plenty to see the fairly small site. The video at the start is helpful, with English subtitles, and the remains are extraordinary. The whole experience gives you a sense of why Cadiz developed as a city, and about all the cultures that have contributed to its development.

This very small site with free entry, discovered under a modern building shows one of the Roman fish sauce (garum) factories which evidently lined the waterline in Roman Cádiz due to the availability of large supplies of local red tuna. You see the tanks used for manufacture and a video explaining the process The site also houses a display on ancient Cádiz which illustrates how the geography of the town has changed over time. An interesting, but brief visit.

Entrance is free at least ... Also you will not have to walk too much from the Cathedral.
Don't expect spending 30 min or an hour at this place. At most 15min should be enough for this place

I think most people are confused as to which site this is. This site is actually situated on the side of the post office building. Not the puppet theatre. That’s a different attraction. When we arrived the sliver door/ shutter was across but you could see a pull up banner inside and the stairs down. On the website it said it was mean’t to be open but it wasn’t! I think a lot of tourist attractions in Cadiz are badly run and organised. If we ever go back to Cadiz we hope it’s open.

A hard place to find in the old part of the city but well worth the visit. This is the only display showing the historical roots of the Phoenician city. It is free to enter but you will need to obtain tickets. The address on Trip Advisor is incorrect as it is situated in Calle San Miguel.

A small but very interesting place to visit where after a short video you visit some archeological remains of Phonecian Cadiz or Gadir as I think it was called then. You don't have to be a history buff to be impressed. It's also free.

If you love any sort of excavations, this place is for you. It is about the Phoenician culture about 3000 years ago. You can read about it if you go on their website they have a short trailer to familiarize what they excavated. You need to pass by many plazas where you will encounter shops and restaurants. We had to ask a few people how to get there.

Unfortunately the Gadir archaeological site was shut during the long weekend we were here but managed to find this place open on the Monday. It was shut on our first attempt and there are no opening hours at the door. Nevertheless we managed to visit and it was worth it despite the small site and reduced spaces. The archaeology was well presented with adequate interpretation. There was also a video projection which looked a little dated but was still informative. It is great that such a site is made available to the public no matter the size. Recommended for a 20 minute visit. It was free too!
