This old gateway is definitely one of the most striking sights in Cadiz, it is akso one of the most iconic features of the City.

The old gates into the City, Puertas de Tierra, were built in the 18th century for defence purposes. They stand at the top of Avineda de la Constitución in the City.

There are two gates, topped with parapets, which stand on either side of a defence tower, known a bastion. It has a rather grand entrance, flanked on either side by stone columns which support a ledge with a carved crest of the City on it. On each corners of the tower, at the top level there is a turret, lookout point. The Spanish flag flies from it's roof.

The gates separates the old City from the modern day part of the City. Nowadays traffic passes through the old gates as people travel about the City and beyond.

The Statues of San Servando and San Germán and the fountain, are situated in front of the gates in Plaza de la Constitución.

This gate in the wall was built in the 18th century and separates the old part of the city from its modern expansion. It has a striking tower and arches under which cars circulate. It has a certain aspect of a memorial monument. It is a very striking monument due to its size and aesthetics. It is worth walking through its surroundings to enjoy its view and as an entrance porch to the old area of Cádiz.

Quite informative. Really interesting history and entrance to the city. Can’t believe how quiet this place was. Only saw 2 other visitors. Good that it’s free

This area is where cruise ships arrive and is the gateway to Cadiz. The area is flat and the sidewalks are nice so walking is easy. The tourist information center is located steps away and they have a lot of info including free maps of Cadiz. The maps are show four self-guidedwalking tours that are painted, Red, Blue, Green and Orange on the streets and/or sidewalks. If you take all four tours and stop along the way you will walk about 4-5 miles and spend 4-6 hours.

Despite Cadiz being founded in circa 1105 B.C. the old part of the present city is pure 18th Century after an Anglo-Dutch raid destroyed the city in 1596 A.D. Back in the 18th Century a defensive wall marked the boundary of the City and the 'Puerta de Tierra' was the main gate through the walls into Cadiz. Today this impressive gate is what remains and thus marks the entrance point into the old city whilst modern day developments sprawl on the opposite side. There is not a great deal to see but worth a visit to take a photo and take in this piece of historic architecture. In front of the gate is a large pool with a water fountain and in front of that 2 columns supporting statues.

This piece of Cadíz history has been integrated well into its modern day infrastructure. It's like the gateway between the old and new parts of the city. At Christmas time, it was decorated nicely.

Monumental access to the city. Also a clever idea for parking, if free. It feels a lot like being in Portugal here, after all Cadiz it's a wonderful "BY THE BORDER" city!

We hadn't done any research regarding places of interest to visit so it was a surprise to spot the Puerta de Tierra as we were walking along the beach, so we strolled over to take a closer look, it's free to look around too. We went up the stairs and found an interesting rooftop complete with some cannons, it was obviously a really important building guarding the city. It has traffic beneath, and to the left is a view of the port and the train station. There was an exhibition within the building of puppets, really interesting too. I would recommend a visit to this place, it won't take all day, we were probably there about an hour or so because we went into the exhibition. Information provided at the place is useful and informative.

You can walk to the top of the battlements and walk around where the city's protectors once walked. It was larger on top than I expected. Nice views.

The symbol of the city Cadiz and a wonderful piece of architecture. The tower marks the boundary between new and old and is extremely impressive.
