We visited the cathedral on a day trip to the city. It was very nice with lots of history most of the signage is in English and Spanish. The are some very nice painting to look at. Seniors get a discount on entry and you get a handheld talking guild to walk around with.

Beautiful cathedral located in a pedestrianised square in old Ameria city. There I a cafe on the square which is great for a drink pre/ post visit. Architecture of cathedral is stunning. The stonework is magnificent.

You pay to enter and get an audio tour. It’s a beautiful building, not what you’d expect inside from the outside. We found the commentary a little dry though so was easy to lose track of what was being said. I don’t regret going in, but wouldn’t put it high up on a list of things to do in Almeria unless you had a special interest.

The ‘Cathedral’ is one of the major attractions in Almería. It was designed as a place of prayer and of war, when it was built in the sixteenth century. This was because the shores of Almería were continually under attack from Turks and Berbers and so it was designed as a place of refuge as well as worship. It was built in a Gothic style with a Renaissance façade.
Whilst I can appreciate the workmanship inside, particularly the carved walnut stalls, I find the interior rather austere. However, a door in the south wall leads to a sunny little oasis of peace and tranquillity in the form of a little garden brimming with flowers and shrubs.
The east facing façade of the Cathedral has a relief of the Portocarro sun, the symbol of the city.
On the north side of the Cathedral is the Plaza de la Catedral, a large attractive square with many tall palm trees. Tourist leaflets describe the Cathedral as having stark formidable walls. Certainly, they are tall and solid and the buttresses, towers and bastions give the building the appearance of a fortress rather than a place of worship. Yet, I think the Cathedral is attractive, the sandstone coloured building set against the bright “Almerian Blue” sky with the palm trees in the foreground makes for an agreeable scene. In any case, the cathedral doorways are impressive with rich Renaissance decorative features.
Another good thing about Almería Cathedral is that it is sometimes the venue for classical concerts especially at Easter.

We visited the cathedral expecting a typical style, however we could not have been more surprised! The outside is not dynamic, looking more like a fortress rather than place of worship, as history tells you why this is when you go inside. The inside is amazing, very ornate and such a peaceful place. A safe haven to worship, with safety & security built in to evade and disguise its real treasure and purpose. €5 entrance fee with audio tour, well worth it.

Beautiful cathedral. We paid for headsets which gave us lots of information about the cathedral. Very amusing pronunciation of some of the English words, particularly as the voice was definitely British with no foreign accent. Suggest they should have checked how to say some of the words, but had us both interested and highly amused! Listen out for the word Episcopal!!
