We booked a tour for a day at Cabo de Gata. We did enjoy our tour, however, we felt it was a bit over-rated.
There is a lot of time on the bus, and when you do reach the different destinations, everyone is lining up to take photos.

Totally overrated, especially in terms of restoration. They've come upstairs and they're docking with gun prices. In San Jose, Las Negras and La Isleta del Moro, you can’t set foot in a restaurant because you get crunched. It is understandable in Agua Amarga, for having the type of pijo tourism they receive, but the others is not to visit it. Letters that differ their content regarding the internet, hidden prices and that increase when you are presented with the account, bad information regarding them. They're abusing the client on forced marches. They do that to the foreign clientele and with their economic level they tolerate it, but the domestic client, and I say this from conversations with others, we have realized that they are caraduras and that we will return to the Park when it is an Amazon rainforest. What will they do when the foreign client is gone? Then comes the crying. Personally I have nothing to object to regarding the surroundings of the Park, but the "white glove professionals" who have in restoration can go fist bumps. It happened to you with the movies when you abused the prices. You're going the same way. Lucky

The total disappointment, they hadn't been here for more than 15 years. This August I was hoping that this would have changed, but things are getting worse and worse. Dirt and dirt on the beaches and roads, in the towns and in the water. Crowded with caravans, not even a website where you can find out about the state of the sea, the beaches and the accesses. To make matters worse, it seems that on top of that you owe them something, what shapes they have....not to mention the prices....
The most sad thing of all is the state of the beaches, cigarette butts, food, cans, Kleenex, wipes...everything unimaginable. Nobody takes care of anything, a real disaster, and disgusting... of course.

Spectacular Natural Park, with a large size of land, with virgin and beautiful coves, where tranquility reigns and you can enjoy a wonderful day. The landscape is arid with flora and fauna native to the place. In summer, the beaches are saturated so it is advisable to get up early to be able to grab a spot and enjoy its crystal clear and clean waters.

We drove around the park with a rental car during the week and visited all the places we had planned to visit. With a rental car and so few tourists on site at this time, it was absolutely wonderful. I brought home almost 500 photos and after a lot of work, 47 of them are now collected in a fantastic photo book. Just waiting for it to arrive from the supplier.

We did a gorgeous afternoon drive from Tabernas (after our 4x4 tour) to San Jose, stopping in the filming locations in the park as well as Playa Genoveses. In December we had no traffic at all and it felt quite remote. I do wish we would have stayed in San Jose as there were some beautiful seaside properties and it was a cute town with restaurants, etc. Easy drive back to Almeria, though.

If you have a few days to spend in Almeria, please do not hesitate to go to Cabo de Gata. It is a natural park, with long, beautiful beaches and nice landscapes. During your visit there one can do all sorts of water sports, from scuba diving to kayak.

beautiful natural park with many diverse spots. we have been at mirado las salinas, just before the place cabo de gata. You can see a lot of wild flamingos at a distance. Then drove along the beach towards La fabriquilla, there you can park the car right along the road to go to the beach. (playa de las Amoladereras) Then drove to the lighthouse, faro, a nice viewpoint with 2 beaches where you can snorkel nicely. Then drove to San jose, nice little town with many restaurants.

This is a nice hike in Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Reserve, that takes about 1.5 hour each way in a relaxed speed. I've read that this route is suitable for nude hiking, so I gave it a shot. I parked at the parking just north of Las Negras. I didn't see any other nude hikers this day, but the dressed ones I met didn't seem to mind and I got some cheerful "hola".
Cala de San Pedro is a secluded bay with a beach with mixed nude and dressed sun-bathers. I spend a couple of hours there before hiking back.

Some previous reviews are completely unrealistic and unbalanced. Seriously, I don't know what some people expect in Almeria. This is out of season right now in January, so you have to accept that a fair amount of summer-only businesses will be shut, but also that everything closes between about 1:30 and 4pm. Once you accept those two facts, this is a really wonderful area. To compare Spanish areas is unfair, as each geographic location is different. This particular area has the only desert in Europe, so expecting greenery is futile. There are the film sets open, where The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was filmed plus others, a disused gold mine and great little villages and inlets along the coast. The mix of desert, mountainous/hilly terrain plus great coastal drives and views and the magnificent beaches, you'd have to be very picky to not appreciate what's on offer here. We live here every year for a few months, and have seen many reviews damning Almeria. I suspect most of these are written by those reviewers who have used a sat nav instead of a map, or they would have seen that there is no road going from San Jose down to Cabo de Gate and the salt pans where the flamingoes strut their stuff. If you realise this, you cut yourself off from the lighthouse and the bird life, amongst others. My advice to those who tour is to grab free maps from the Information centres and read up what is where. Thinking back to our first visit here, everywhere looks shut until you turn off the road and explore. This is an area where a lot of Spanish live, so there are indeed a lot of restaurants and cafes around but due to the park, not on every corner. For those who are experienced tourers, you will go a long way to get the mix of coastline, hills, monuments, desert, and beaches as good as this region.

Hello, could anyone tell me if there is a recommended horse riding centre near Cabo de Gata where we can ride on the beach, for me and my 2 children
Written August 27, 2018
There’s a great one at Paraje Los Albacetes, Rodalquilar, near Nijar and it is named Oro y Luz (this is the company name).
They do beach day excursions....not sure about ages etc but the guy who runs it has been going for years and is highly regarded in equestrian circles out here.
The web site is good.......search for it, but I can’t give you the email address as Tripadvisor blocks this info.

we are traveling from almeria town, can you tell me a landmark to tell the taxi driver where to take us,we are looking for the old part of nijar town for ceramics and rugs.Thank you

There is only one long street in the village so not possible to miss..some are real tourist shops so worth checking several for whatever you want... about 3km off the A7 motorway....bought some dishes there just last week, but just for your info, if you are after plant pots, have bought at a local garden centre cheaper....but that was in the opposite direction of where you are.

Is there a winter bird list for Cabo de Gata?
Written December 21, 2017
Unfortunately I have no idea, there is a list of the birds when you get there and they have nice tourist center which you can visit , but not all days and not all along .
Written December 26, 2017
Hola se puede visitar el sitio en coche y por tu cuenta o es obligatorio contratar una excursión ??? Gracias!!!
Written December 7, 2017
Con tu coche podrás llegar a los lugares mas escondidos del parque natural. No hace falta contratar nada.
