About
The Haus Am Horn is the only building designed and constructed by the Bauhaus in Weimar. This model house was built especially for the 1923 Bauhaus exhibition. It provided an opportunity for the Bauhaus masters and students to publicly present their visions of modern living and architecture for the first time. The Haus Am Horn will reopen on 18 May 2019 with a brand-new exhibition.

The ancestor of hundreds of thousands of typical houses around the world.
Jan 2019
The model house (Muster Haus) at the Horn is the only completed house of the Bauhaus school in Weimar, although there is a University of the same name. This was the reason for inclusion in the UNESCO list in 1996. Why is this seemingly ordinary house included in the list along with Sagrada Familia or Piazza San Pietro? It is difficult to see in this house the ancestor of hundreds of thousands of typical houses around the world in Germany, the USA, the USSR, China. However, this is true. Housing construction in Germany after the end of world war I faced a severe drop in demand for construction. No one had any money. The mastermind of the Bauhaus school, Walter Gropius, put forward the idea that it is necessary to build houses not on the construction site, but at the factories. The house should be extremely simplified and technological. The house at the horn was a "model building box". The house was planned to be built in 4 months due to the use of new materials and modular construction principle. Blocks of cinder-concrete were used for the construction of walls, slabs of recycled peat for thermal insulation, multi-layer bitumen coating for the roof. Central heating system with coal-fired boiler in the basement and gas water heaters. The minimalistic design of the house even after almost 100 years provokes to perceive the house as modern. I didn't get inside, the house was closed to tourists because some repairs were going on. However, I was not very upset.

It is as it looks... A house

It is just a normal house, that has no particular or fantastic details. If this was free i would definitely recommend it. But save your money and go somewhere else.

A must for Architecture enthusiasts

This is where the International Style was born, and this Bauhaus exhibition house from 1923 is still a very liveable layout and pleasant space, with brilliant planning. The street that the house is on, Am Horn, is loaded with homes of every style and worth a walk before or after visiting this little treasure. Best on a sunny day.

so far to visit

i was there for some events, but i didn't find it interesting because it is so far away from city center and you have to go up of a slip and it's like a small house with some pictures and drawings of students.

Weimar city is amazing, Am Horn is borring

That this house should be amazing, I don't get it. Just a white box, really strange contrast to the jaw dropping beautiful houses you pass on the road up to Am Horn. I really love the atmosphere of Weimar. If you are little tired of middle age cities around Germany, go to Weimar. The location for Bauhaus architecture, you can find it at the street Bauhaus strasse, and at the art school. Weimar is stuffed with amazingly elegant architecture and historical buildings climbing up on the hillside. I small river passing the city.

Great architecture, poor exposition
Jul 2013
The 'Haus am Horn' was build for the Bauhaus exposition in 1923 as a modelhouse of the Bauhaus movement. It is amasing to see how relevant this new way of looking at architecture still is today and how groundbreaking the ideas were in the ealy 20's. The exposition itself could benefit from some more content though. There were only a few development pieces to be found of young students of the architecture school. Ideally the pieces at display in the new Weimarer Bauhaus museum should be moved to the 'Haus an Horn'.

A cube in a cuboid, a feast for architects and Bauhaus lovers but a curse for traditionalists!
Apr 2013 • Friends
Interesting witness of a period in which architects were in search of new models and alternatives for classical ways of living. For the people living in this residential neighbourhood, this house was kind of a provocation. No ornamentation, no colours, just a cuboid from which a cube stands out. A cubic spaceship, stranded at the edge of the Park an der Ilm.

The house can be visited only on wednesdays and in the weekend. For your orientation in the park. Cross the Ilm river, follow the path towards Goethes Garden House and go up the hill, keeping Goethe at your left side.

Visit first their website to enjoy your visit more!
