“Well laid out interactive museum”
The former Grand Ducal Museum, built in 1869, was one of the first museums established in Germany. In years past, the museum mainly served as a venue for temporary exhibitions, but in April 2019, it will reopen with a permanent exhibition on early...more

Albeit a quick trip to this museum that day it was a very interesting experience. The book binding and making exhibit was great as well as the Nietzsche exhibit.

See this museum before the new Bauhaus museum as it sets out the context so well. Deceptive in the sheer quantity of information, allow yourself time and pace yourself!

A MUST for all those who wish to understand how and by whom Modernism came to Weimar and prepared the way for Gropius and Bauhaus. Extremely well documented, including exceptional historical insights into the role of personalities such as Harry Graf Kessler, the role of...More

A fine exhibition on Van der Velde, Nietzsche and Kessler as forerunners to the Bauhaus period. Worthwhile seeing before seeing the New Bauhaus Museum. Buy your Bauhauscard here, where there is no line.

‘Become a fighter for modernism’. The New Weimar Museum convinces with sensible exhibition design, tasteful selection of materials and twinkle-in-the-eye hands-on multimedia installations.

We saw the exhibition “The Ernestines. A Dynasty Shapes Europe” on the last day it was open. The museum itself is very easy to access, at the bottom of the hill from the Hauptbahnhof, only a few minutes walk from the centre of town. The...More

We had assumed the exhibition would only be occupying a part of the Neues Museum but in actual fact it had taken over the whole building. For those interested in the history of royalty it is fascinating but probably best avoided otherwise.

Enjoyed the tour of The Ernestines in the City. The impact of the family on Europe and the West is impressive.

The museum (actually a Gallery in English terms) is, I am told, the work of one wealthy collector and dealer of contemporary art, who uses it to showcase the things he is currently interested in. The installation on view when I visited was not terribly...More

The old museum is worth a visit - a smaller cousin of the Neues Museum in Berlin but without its funding and extensive collection. Entry to the Rebecca Horn installation 'Konzert fur Buchenwald' which was made in 1999 for the 'European Year of Culture' is...More
