My wife and I visited during the Christmas Market Season. The location was close to our hotel (Dorint Am Dom) and we walked several times and used public transportation also. The Platz with the color, smells, and music via live groups was spell binding. This turned out to be our favorite Christmas Market. We will return.

Domplatz looks especially enchanting at dusk. The spires of St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Severin's Church resemble space rockets ready to shoot into the night sky. The square is unnaturally large for medieval cities with their narrow crooked streets and small squares. This is explained simply. During the war of independence in 1813, Prussian artillery destroyed several blocks North of the square in an attempt to dislodge Napoleon's troops from the city. The quarters have not been restored, but a visual perspective has been opened. The reason is banal the large area gave more space for parades of Prussian troops. The Prussian king Frederick William III visited the city in 1823 and the city hall renamed obsequiously the square in his honor. The Communists returned the former name of the square in 1945. Paradoxically. However, the main event in the square has not been associated with religion or military parades for a long time. The Christmas market takes place here in December. Many Germans consider it the best in the country.

Just returned from our visit to this fantastic German market, we have been a few times and has a great atmosphere, on from 10.00am - 20.00pm every day. The Domplatz is a large area below the cathedrals. It is a 20 minute walk from the rail station or you can get a tram.

The Platz, or cathedral Square is very big and I assume that is filled when it comes to Christmas Markets.

The Domplatz is a very large square overlooked on one side by the very impressive church and cathedral. There is also an open air biergarten and the rest of the square is surrounded by an array of buildings ranging from medieval to the present. The large open space in the centre is used for the Xmas market and other markets and events throughout the year.

Lovely center square in Erfurt. Lined with beautiful buildings with the churches as the main focal point. We visited during the Christmas market in 2018 and can't wait to go back to see the square without the distractions of the market as I am sure it will be even more beautiful.

A number of the tram lines seem to go by here. Several of the buildings are half-timbered. On a bank was a floral planting of soe red blooms in the shape of the Luther rose.

We were here December 13th 2017 for the Christmas Market. We found this market to be more international than the one in Nuremberg and Regensburg. There were booths from Austria, Turkey, Slovakia and Romania. We always love eating in the market to see what each town specializes in. We sampled a meter long sausage, hot apple cider and a star shaped donut. It was such a clean town and we loved all the lights. Every town decorates the streets that lead up to the main square with lights. It is fun to see all the decorations and how each town celebrates Christmas. There is a wonderful street for shopping near the river and a great gingerbread shop to sample all kinds of gingerbread. We also attended the organ concert in St Stephans Dom. There were about 500 people in attendance and the clarity of the organ and the church itself is beautiful. Well worth going. We walked to the Inn River(the town is at the confluence of 3 rivers) at sunset and took pictures, it was so beautiful and peaceful. Beautiful place at Christmas.
