Amazing valley and great walk to the Hohe Sonne

Next to the Wartburg a must have if you are in Eisenach. Sport or walking shoes highly recommended. On the top is a lovely beer garden to recover before walking back, including... read more

Have you ever been to a gorge in southern France or Spain? Or to limestone country in the Yorkshire Dales? Or closer to (our) home, the gorge of the River Allen west of Haltwhistle in Northumberland? If so, you might not bother with this, which is little more than a corridor between some not very high rocks. It's fine if... More

Next to the Wartburg a must have if you are in Eisenach. Sport or walking shoes highly recommended. On the top is a lovely beer garden to recover before walking back, including Thuringia Bratwurst.

If you feel the need to hike on your visit in Thuringia why don't hike at the Drachenschlucht. Its a very pretty hike through beautiful rock formations. I did it in March so just at the beginning of spring when nature awakes. Very beautiful. I recommend to take a sandwich and drinks with you to make a picnic at one... More

Just walked through the Drachenschlucht, on a dry day at the end of September, and very much enjoyed it. Amazing rock structures, and huge variety of greenery. Easy walking most of the way, although the last bit was pretty steep, and included steps. Make sure you wear good walking shoes. Totally agree with previous reviewer re state of toilets at... More

The Drachenschlucht is definitely worth the hike, the track is well-kept and easy to manage, even for children. If you feel like it, take the 10-km round up to the Hohe Sonne, along the Weinstraße over the Drachenstein summit (lovely view) and back through the Landgrafenschlucht (another lovely gorge), it's all worth the effort. Signposting could be better, so take... More

I recommend the lovely walk but ensure you don't need a toilet at the top. The small refreshment shack offers a cess pit that is rarely cleared out. We couldn't believe we were in Germany in 2012. In fact the 18th century toilet exhibit in the Bachaus would have been a more hygenic option. Shame on you Hohe Sonne.

This was a nice easy hike in the woods. It was nice to get back to nature after our stay in Berlin. The canyon was very cool and so green. I was able to cool off from the hot weather and get some great pictures.
