The Old Town is a fascinating city to visit. It used to be the principal city of the Hanseatic League , a number of towns along the Baltic sea which did a thriving trade and prospered mightily during the XIII and XIV centuries.
It has been restored after WWII , after being severely damaged by Allied bombing . The houses and buidings are all in German Gothic style, massive red brick constructions with steep roofs and gables . There are many churches , all with very tall steeples that could be spotted by sailors , assisting their navigation to the port.
It is pleasant to walk the narrow cobbled streets , or next to the river.
Lubeck is famous for its marzipan candies , Niederbecker being the store with a centuries old tradition for its world renowned sweets.
Thomas Mann's novel "Buddenbrook" tells the story of a family of rich Lubeck merchants and how they tragically end.

Not a city I was familiar with before visiting, but it is the epitome of a hidden gem. It is absolutely steeped in history from Roman times through to its prominence during the times of the Hansiatic League.
The old town has some beautiful old and uniquely styled buildings surrounded by the usual modern day shopping streets.
The story of the towns evolution is fascinating particularly around the power struggle between merchants and clergy in days gone by.
From the town square, to the hidden ‘hobbit’ dwellings, to the historic buildings to the beautiful riverside, Lubeck is a very charming and interesting destination.

I was visiting the Hansastadt fiew days ago. It is amazing. Many buildings were build in the 14th centaury. Still exisiting. At the entrace to the city you see Holstein Tor, impressive. You take parking place and go to old town. You see there Boodenbrock Haus, Thomas Mann Family Haus. Oposite Marien Church, with the devil figure. A couple of meters further you see the Rathaus, 600 hpundred years old. You can be walking back now to Katharina Church. You turn right by McDonald, you see 300 years old beer lokal. You move further you meet Guenther Grass Haus, Nobel price winner. I can only recommend to visit the Lubeck city!

During my holiday in Germany I stayed for 4 nights in Lübeck. I used Lübeck as a base for some trips to the area. The central area of Lübeck is very picturesque and probably one day could be enough to visit the main attractions and get an idea of the city. Staying longer, however, allowed me to enjoy dinners and evenings along the river (at the end of July the weather allowed) and to make some trips during the day either by renting electric bicycles or by taking a ferry trip to Travemünde. In short, 4 beautiful days.

One-day trip to the Christmas market in Lübeck
- and a visit to Marienkirchen
Unfortunately, we went on a Saturday in December and it cannot be recommended, because there are way too many people. We couldn't get to the stalls and the queues were long. The prices were very good and the Christmas market offered all kinds of goodies and beautiful handicrafts. I bought a couple of lanterns home, the kids got goodies from the stalls and we had good Glögg.
Visit Marienkierchen - it is really impressive and leaves a big impression, with the crashed church bells that lie as a memory of the horrors of the war. The church is full of symbols of death - a truly special experience. Remember to pat the mouse with your left hand - because it is closest to the heart, so you will be fine!

The city is very pretty, clean and characteristic, however I remain convinced that one day is enough to see everything and that you can make a day out of Hamburg without staying overnight there. The people are almost all kind and the prices for travel are quite expensive. Speaking with other Italians I notice that Lübeck is a city that has a certain success as a destination but personally I have been to Bremen and I liked it more.
Very beautiful Travemunde about twenty kilometers away on the Baltic Sea.
Last thing to point out, unlike other places in Germany, few people here speak English.

I noticed from the reviews that there are both very enthusiastic reviews and those that did not like it very much. I find the truth in the middle. Pros: The location of the old town between two river arms and some old town houses, with many buildings that look after 1950s buildings in between. Annoying: The countless speed restrictions on the approach, sometimes quickly and minimally changing, e.g. 60, then immediately 70 or 80 again, then immediately 60, much 30 and 20 again, with the countless speed cameras (warning !). These speed restrictions are hardly understandable to me for the most part and tempt me to exceed them, hence probably the many speed cameras.

Lubeck has a relatively large historic center. Medieval buildings can be found throughout the Altstadt.
The city walk recommended by Tourist Info is fun and takes you through the entire Altstadt.
Lubeck is an absolute must!!

For me, who has been to Germany at least 15 times, Lübeck was a real discovery. I found it a wonderful Hansa town, just as beautiful as Bruges or Tallinn. The streets are lined with 16th century houses, the town is surrounded by the Trave river and green spaces. Don't forget to have a look at the pretty courtyards behind the houses.
1 remark : sadly Lübeck was bombed in WOII and so parts were destroyed, meaning the main shopping street is very modern and boring. Skip this one, almost every other street closer to the river is beautiful. For a great view of the magnificent facades, take a boat ride on the river. Lübeck is in my top 3 of Germany!

Written October 3, 2018

Is walking from Lubeck HBF into Lubeck a reasonable idea? We'll be on a day trip from Hamburg so no luggage to worry about. I always like to sightsee on foot vs bus if I can, but it's hard to tell from maps if the area around the train station has sidewalks or other safe pedestrian options? It looks like it would be a pleasant walk over the river?
Written July 5, 2018
Did this 2 weeks ago.
Out of the train station you turn left Nd follow the road through the suburbs. It’s a nice walk. You get to a park and look for the kiosk that has an i sign. Check with them on the direction. Just around. Corner from there which is not obvious for outsiders is a spectacular greeting and the town in all its splendour.
I’d say a 1.5km walk to the Medievel City Gate.........

Written June 4, 2017
Det er den gode atmosfære. Masser af cafeer. Mange utrolige flotte bygninger fra middelalderen - meget velholdte. En dejlig sejltur rundt om byen. Mange gode restauranter. Miljøet i Altstadt er bare helt unikt

Are the streets walkable if using a walk assist? a walker with wheels?
Written March 9, 2017
Hi,
Yes, the streets are walkable using a walker with wheels. There may be areas of cobble stones but there are more smooth streets than not. It is a great city to visit and check out the marzipan store to look at all the wonderful creations. Of course there is the famed gate (used on German currency). We also did a nice boat tour - you might be able to get on the boat with your walker.

Within the Old Town what are some of the entrance fees after passing through the Holstentor city gate? thank you. Is there a canal ride along the river? Where do you board? How long is the canal ride and cost? thank you
Written July 13, 2016
No fees, and a canal trip costs €11 per adult person
Written July 13, 2016
Hi. Is there an entrance fee for Holstentor Museum? How much? thank you
Written July 13, 2016
No memory of entrance fee, we are always happy to pay entrance fees knowing how expensive it is to maintain and staff. I would consult website for specifics. Hope you have a safe trip.

außerhalb dieser Zeit ohne Parkschein (also frei), sondern: dann gar kein Parkplatz
mit den von "vonzech" richtig beschriebenen Folgen
Written October 3, 2015

We are on a cruise and will be docking in Kiel for the day (7a-5p) and want to do a day trip to Lubeck. What is the easiest way to get to Lubeck from Kiel?
Written June 13, 2015
There is a direct train connection leaving Kiel Hbf every hour at .04 and .44. Travel time 1h28 (leaving .04) and 1h08.
I think that may be the easiest way.
Have a look at the German Railway website (deutschebahn). It gives directions in English.
Lübeck is wonderful. Enjoy!
