I learnt a lot of surprising facts about Flensburg and its history and enjoyed those about two hours in this museum much more than expected. It is well worth a visit.

A bit difficult to know your way around.. should be clearer with numbers, for instance. Not overwhelmingly interesting for a foreigner. Would be impossible for only english speakning people as the most information was in german and danish.

The slavery exhibit was especially good as was the section on the rum trade and it’s importance to Flensburg‘s development. Wish someone would address Flensburg and WWII.

Since we last came the exhibition on the Danish islands, Flensburg, and slavery, has opened on the top floor. Danish colonial history used to be rather conveniently forgotten, because they sold their Caribbean islands to the USA back in 1917 (now US Virgin Islands). This story boards in this area include English, and it is a most worthwhile addition to this excellent little maritime museum.

The museum is very relevant and interesting with it's focus on local maritime history. The areas history is indeed interesting as a historic trading center (a so called Hansestad). Audio guided tours available. Entry fee reasonable. Wheelchair friendly.

Really fun and interesting museum. In the basement is an audio visual experience detailing what it was like to live in past Flensburg wirh the Rum boom. The other floors are a mix of history, boat manufacturing and the slave trade during colonisation. The only down side for me as an English speaker. No signage is in English. Just danish and German. There didn't seem to be any English leaflets or booklets to use whilst going around which was a bit of a shame. However the exhibitions were wonderful so you did get a great sense what it was all about.

This is exactly what a local maritime museum should be like. Full of interest, particularly on the rum trade, where it does not shy away from the fact that the Danes had slavery in their West Indian Islands (sold to USA in 1917 as US Virgin Islands). Lots of hands-on exhibits for the young (and not so young!) to enjoy.

This fine museum of local shipping history is well worth an hour or more of your time. Displays, paintings, photos, models, and artifacts are all on display. There's a shop, of course, and a cafe. Just across the road is the berth of the historic steamship Alexandra.
