A beautiful cathedral. Yes, plainer than many inside, but still beautiful - very detailed sculptures and carvings. Especially liked the 'weeping angels' - left hand side of the cathedral through a door. And don't miss the tombs of Otto the Great and his first wife Edith.

Buy a leaflet for the cathedral (1 euro) so you know what you are looking at. Costs 2 euros to take photos but worth it.

Then go to the Dommuseum Ottanianum which is next door to find out more.

Magdeburger Dom has classic architecture, inside and outside. There is also a new pinnacle built which was torn down during the war.

Pretty building, well worth a view, especially from the wide spacious square next to it, offering shade and fountains for the little ones to run around in, from where it is also an easy walk to the green citadel on one side, and the water front on the other. Great spot for a cool down.

Somehow I had failed to visit Magdeburg even after die Wende. This time we made the trip, about 1.5 hours from Berlin, and we were enthralled, especially by the Dom. It is a superb example of the early Gothic style, with some very good statuary, most notably the five wise and five foolish virgins in the north portal. The columns rise very tall, drawing ones eyes upward. There is a nice cloister with some Romanesque remains. There is a 2 euro charge for photography. We didn't take the guided tour, so I don't know whether it is available in English. On the whole your visit will be more informative if you read German. The Dom "vaut le voyage," as the Guide Michelin puts it: well worth the trip.

Of course taking a look at the Cathedral was on our list of things to do in Magdeburg. Like other churches in the eastern part of Germany, this one is very impressive on the outside but rather empty inside.

The very friendly guides and greeters though managed to make the atmosphere inside special, and we also had an exhibit with beautiful work by Klaus-Dieter Jeß, a local sculptor, to look at.

The very nice lady in the shop situated right in the middle of the church was able to explain away our disappointment at not being able to take the stairs to the top of the tower: without a guide the climb was a bit too risky for individuals alone. Unfortunately we were a bit too late for the last guided way to the top.

We were able to read about the history of the cathedral and the challenges of maintaining such a monument in spite of the lack of support both by the the East German government and the secular stance of many residents on some of the informative posters exhibited throughout.

We’ll be coming by again on our next trip to Magdeburg to experience more of the cathedral.

There are signs when you walk in the church asking you to buy a photo permit for two euros. The place is so beautiful, and there are so many exquisite works of art, that the minimal price is worth it. Take the time to look at the items around the cathedral individually. You will find some fascinating gems.

Be aware that the church, especially during the winter, can get extremely cold. Bundle up. Coats, hats, scarves, and gloves...all necessary. We actually went outside in January to warm up. Despite the temperature, it's a lovely place that is definitely worth a visit.

Beautiful on the outside. Inside the building is gloomy and austere. It is nevertheless a highlight in Magdeburg.

Like most of evangelic churches also Magdeburger Dom looks very simple at the first sight but it has plenty of beautiful details. It is unusually richly decorated. Unfortunately it obviously needs more care. A lot of mainly wooden decorations is worn and don't look as well as they could. Yet it is well worth a visit.
