If you're interested in classical music, you surely have heard of the famous Gewandhaus orchestra, maybe listened to some of their recordings. If you have a chance to go to one of their concerts in their home, the great Gewandhaus with its warm, but precise acoustics, do it! The concert hall is wonderful. The exterior of the building may be an acquired taste...

The variety and quality of the concerts as well as the sound make it a great experience. Nice is the option to stay in the lobby for a snack and drinks in the lobby of the Gewandhaus to reflect the concert.

Gewardhaus zu Leipzig is presently accompanying Thomanerchor Leipzig (St. Thomas Boys Choir) on tour in Asia. Collectively, they performed Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew's Passion last night as part of the Hong Kong Arts Festival and will be visiting
The performance was conducted by acting Thomaskantor, Gotthold Schwartz, who lead an impressive collaboration which included the choir, lead vocals and symphony seamlessly transiting from one movement to the next while beautifully executing this Bach's masterpiece.
The Gewardhaus zu Leipzig vocalists in particular had exquisite voices, just lovely to hear. Having the world renowned St. Thomas Boys Choir to provide the supporting background voices made this a memorable performance to have seen.
We felt very thankful to Gewardhaus zu Leipzig and Thomanerchor Leipzig for visiting Hong Kong and performing this Bach masterpiece for our city.

This building is usually given four or five stars in reviews as it is based on going inside. It was closed while I was there so my review is soley based on the building itself. Its a bit like the Opernhaus on the same square where it simply doesnt do enough to get you excited especially when you know what goes on inside. Its a strange looking building which also lights up at night and I found the most interesting part about it was the murals that shine through its windows.

We attended two concerts during our stay in Leipzig and fully enjoyed the comfort and beauty of this concert space. Staff were both friendly and helpful. They even provided free cough drops for guests! This will definitely be high on our list of places to visit the next time we are in Leipzig.

Located at the heart of the city it was great experience to wander around to the beautiful building and attend a concert. The student ticket was very reasonable and it was a wonderful evening altogether.

Excellent acoustics, and one of the best orchestras of the world. What else can a music lover ask for? I got a cheap ticket of 23 euro and the seat had a good view of the scenario and the sound was perfectly balanced.

Our third visit to Leipzig and third visit to the Gewandhaus. As usual the orchestral performance was outstanding. Also the experience of an evening to this fantastic auditorium(built in DDR times) is well worth it. However on this particular occasion we were taking friends and were very disappointed to find that the view from two of our five seats was obstructed by a large camera. The camera operator was very sympathetic and contacted the office. A staff member approached but was not in slightest way interested.
TIP:-
I would strongly suggest that when making a reservation in expensive seats (or any seats for that matter) that you ask if there is likely to be any form of temporary obstruction to the view of the orchestra or performers, we certainly shall.

I can't recommend the Gewandhaus too highly -- wonderful acoustics, usually a good choice of music, and, importantly, seating that is not difficult to get to. One of my favourite concert halls worldwide.

Does anyone happen to know if they sell tickets not only in advance but also on the very day of a performance? In other words, is there any possibility for me to get a ticket of the performance by standing in a line that day even if they say all the tickets of the performance are all sold out on the website?

Are there any performances taking place in the main auditorium during summer months? I'm in Leipzig for the first time and had hoped to hear the Gewandhaus Orchester play a concert in the Gewandhaus, but I only see concerts in the Opernhaus, or the Mendelssohn Saal (which I believe it the smaller hall located inside the Gewandhaus). Thanks in advance, Peter.

Sorry, but I didn´t see your question until now! I suppose you´ll find everything that is going on at the Gewandhaus on their website - if there is nothing on the site about concerts in the main hall then there is propably no concert...
Anyhow, the Gewandhaus is truely worth visiting when you´re in Leipzig!
Boas, sou técnico desenhador de luz na área do teatro e da música, gostava de saber como posso contactar esta instituição..obrigado
