Auerbachs Keller (Auerbach's Cellar) is a famous restaurant located in the lower level of Mädlerpassage at Marktplatz. In Goethe’s play Faust, Dr. Faust met Mephistopheles in this restaurant, and this play propelled the restaurant to worldwide fame. When we visited Leipzig multiple times in the past, we used to spend most of our time visiting music related sites and having excursions to Dresden and Weimar. Only when we had spare time we used to go to Mädlerpassage to look at the sculptures of “Faust with Mephistopheles” & “Student Bewitched by Devil”. We also peaked into Auerbachs Keller without actually going inside. But this time, we decided to have dinner at this restaurant. When we entered the restaurant, we were surprised at the huge size of the dining area. We were also intrigued by its decors, including wall paintings with devils & a devil figure sitting atop a beer/wine barrel at the corner. The food servers were efficient, and the diverse menu items were reasonably priced. We ordered Meatloaf and Viennse Schnitzel dishes with drinks. The tasty dishes came to us quickly, and the portions were very generous. When we came into the restaurant at 6.30 pm, we saw some empty tables. But soon, the empty tables were filled with groups of diners who appeared to be conference attendees and group tourists. The restaurant’s atmosphere was lively and vibrant. We had a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience at this restaurant. Auerbachs Keller is highly recommended.

It is very pleasant to sit in a historic setting that even Goethe used to visit, but it sure is a tourist trap. The food is very average, but unless they have many cooks how could they possibly cook a la carte. Prices are OK, but not great value for the dishes themselves. Maybe just drop by to take a look and take some photos but I would advise on eating elsewhere if you want good food.

The food and service were fine, very similar to what you'd get at many other places. The best element is its history, and the bragging rights of saying you ate where Goethe got the idea for Faust. Come to think of it, I have a sudden idea for a play too...

This place has a history stretching back centuries. Its most recent makeover is Art Deco 100 years ago. It has strong links with Goethe.
Food is typical of the region and well cooked. Portions are generous.
The environment is a many arched well painted and decorated basement. It feels old! Lots of atmosphere.
Service is efficient. Get there before 9pm to order food before the kitchen closes.
An essential visit

If now some Professor would sell wine to his students it would cause a scandal and the Professor would probably be fired from the University. But Dr. Auerbach did it. Dr. Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach began to sell wine secretly to students from the cellar of his home in 1525. Leipzig University professor, doctor, and philosopher, Dr. Stromer was known in the city as “Doctor Auerbach” for his origins from the town of Auerbach in the Oberpfalz. However, this is not famous Auerbach cellar. He was praised by Goethe, who dedicated an entire Chapter to it in "Faust", where Faust and Mephistopheles fooled Leipzig students Brander, Altmayer, Frosch and Siebel. We don't find in a London eatery, which was visited by the heroes of Shakespeare and the restaurants where the Musketeers Dumas drank my favorite wine of Anjou, but in the case of Goethe all the way around. The restaurant is popular not only among tourists but also locals. There were plenty of seats available.Prices are above average. Schnitzel, steaks cost from 25 to 29 euros, soups-5-7 euros, sausages -17. Unlike students in "Faust" I did not order champagne and Tokay, and limited to beer and Saxon onion soup.

Very nice looking venue but reminded me of a German beer hall. Open and loud and kind of gimmicky or touristy. The food was typical German style with limited vegetarian options. I would say the pictures came out great but we were ready to go when the meal was over.
