Theaterplatz in Dresden , definitely a must see when you are in Dresden - it is one of those spots that can't be missed when you are visiting the city of Dresden.
Now the majority in these buildings that can be seen today were damaged in the (useless) air raid of 1945 - I will spare you the details, those interested can see documentaries , read books and articles about the firestorm that was raging here in Feb 1945 - however, everything got repaired and restored here in the years after the war and today it shining in its true beauty.
In the Theaterplatz you will find several well known landmarks of the city to mention a few: Zwinger, Semper Opera, The Hofkirche, Dresden Castle ... you can find the rest of the "interesting" spots by yourself - but be sure that there are some more than the short list I've put together.
When in Dresden it is pretty much not possible to miss the Theaterplatz.

The Theaterpltaz is the immense square that opens along the Elbe river, near the Augustus Bridge, among the most beautiful and important in the historic center of Dresden. Some of the most notable buildings in the city overlook this square, the imposing Semperoper, a neo-Renaissance facade of the Zwinger, a side of the Catholic Cathedral and a small portion of the Royal Palace. Finally, in the center of the square you can see the equestrian monument dedicated to King John of Saxony. Despite its vastness, it still retains a certain elegance and remains one of the main attractions of the city.

The Statue of the king John Wettin of Saxony, being the focal point of Theaterplatz, is surrounded by the most iconic buildings viz. the Saxonian State Opera and Gallery on the left, then the Royal Palace and the cathedral of the Holy Trinity. You have four magic sights at hand.

Standing in this almost empty Theaterplatz in mid-morning, I imagined it filled with horse-drawn carriages and couples arriving for an evening performance two hundred years ago. Surrounded by so much stonework and lovely architecture, it's like a step back in time. We learned on a half day walking tour that the darkened color of the old buildings is not due to their age or WWII bombing... No, the limestone used to build naturally turns dark and erodes. It is a never-ending battle to replace architectural details that are in danger of coming loose or collapsing. We did attend the Dresdent Opera one evening, quite a beautiful experience!

The Theaterplatz is a public square where you can see three of the major landmarks of Dresden, the Semperoper opera house of Dresden, the Zwinger palace complex and Katholische Hofkirche. There’s not much in the way of restaurants and cafes around the square.

stay away from this extra right wing nest of Nazis. Pegida's home town. Not a pleasant nor safe place to be right now. What a shame because this used to be my favorite romantic town in Germany. Destroyed by war, rebuilt after reunification and probably set for destruction again... Did history teach these fascists nothing?

I really did not have a chance to go inside but from the outside it looks very charming. You can take photos from all angles. It is in the centre of historic areas.

This building was very impressive in its architecture OUTSIDE and INSIDE.

It was a SMALL theater but ELEGANT.

We booked a BALLET while in DRESDEN. It was nice to dress up and attend the BALLET.

The building is directly across the street from the Hotel
Teschenbergpalais Kempinski. Was not afraid to walk back to hotel after ballet. Many others doing the same.

Using this platz in front of the Semper Opera House is a good place for the start of an exploratory walk through Old Town. Perched in the middle of the platz is an equestrian statue of King John, an early Saxon ruler. As you turn to the left is the exceptional Zwinger complex and its museums. Further left is the Royal Palace and the Cathedral. You can continue from there toward the Neumarkt and encounter a number of other historical sights including the Frauenkirche.

Every direction you turn you see astounding architectural beauty. The Theatre is of course the highlight - Originally built in 1841, this hall was rebuilt by the original architect after a fire in 1869 and again renovated following the war damage. Nevertheless, the opera building, is regarded as one of the most beautiful European opera houses.
Opposite of course is the equally impressive Katholische Hofkirche, the City Cathedral with its wonderful gothic architecture and spire.
If you visit Dresden then you simply must go here!!!
