Not exactly a tourist hotspot and as it sites between the trendy north and tourist old town, there's quite a bit of competition for attention. It's an okay area and the Dresden Neustadt station is here as well. There's probably more restaurants worth going to inside the station than the mostly fast food outside it.

I stayed in Neustadt while I was visiting Dresden and loved the vibrancy of this place. There are bars, restaurants and clubs everywhere, but not the touristy kind that charge way too much and all look alike.

In Neustadt, each place is unique. There's a jazz bar, a rock bar, a chocolate and cocktail place (yes, two in one) and much more. The walls of the buildings are covered in street art - and not just some tags, but real street ART - and you see all kinds of people walking here.

Be sure to walk through the Kunsthofpassage, an inner court and passage way in between the Görlitzer Strasse and the Alaunstrasse with beautifully decorated houses, some small boutiques and a coffee shop.

People visit Dresden for the old town. That's fair enough. But if you have time to relax and are travelling from Prague to Berlin I would suggest to stay for a few days or perhaps even a whole week in Dresden Neustadt (and the neighbouring Hechtviertel!!). It is like a modern village in a city. There are plenty of nice restaurants and bars and it is just lovely to potter around in this neighbourhood, which I think currently is one of the most attractive place to live in Germany. It has not been destroyed during the war and was preserved from demolition during the GDR-era. During the day you can hire a bike and cycle along the river towards the Czech border (the cycle route is STUNNING). If you get tired just stop in the next town, put the bike on the local train that runs frequently and brings you back to Neustadt for a nice local beer and a great night out. There are heaps of little courtyards where you can relax and also a very good alternative cinema. If you are travelling on a budget: young Dresdeners often meet on the street and buy their drinks at one of the kiosks in this neighbourhood. On the weekend you will meet plenty of locals.

I spent two weeks in Dresden in October 2008 taking a German course at the Goethe Institut in the Neustadt. Dresden Neustadt (new city) is now actually the OLD part of Dresden, having been spared the firebombing of 1945 that destroyed the Altstadt (old city) with the Frauenkirche, etc. While the Altstadt has been in part rebuilt, e.g., the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger with its museums, the Semper Opera, etc. the beautiful old apartment buildings that surrounded the old city center were replaced by boring DDR architecture.

While the rebuilt Altstadt is a teaming tourist mecca, albeit a lovely one (and viewed by at least some Dresden residents as akin to Disneyworld/Epcot), real people live in the Neustadt. People are out walking, shopping, biking, etc. Young families abound, many riding bikes trailing baby carriages. While many interesting old apartment buildings are in terrible condition, having suffered neglect and animosity (as bourgeois architecture) during the DDR time, many have been beautifully renovated. Neustadt is full of real people, especially young people. It is full of interesting neighborhoods, interesting shops, art galleries, parks, restaurants, bars and beer gardens. In the evenings the sidewalks teem with people. While there are plenty of "interesting" looking people, including some apparently homeless, and some slightly scary looking, I in fact felt surprisingly safe during the two weeks I lived there.

I found a delightful little 2-room "Ferienwohnung" (vacation apartment) on the Louisenstrasse, very near a streetcar stop. I used the great Dresden streetcar system every day, shopped in the grocery stores, learned to navigate the laundromat, and came to really like Dresden. You haven't seen Dresden if you haven't experienced Neustadt.

You will never see as much graffiti in your life. Don't let it be a turn off. This is one of the most vibrant and one of the safest places in Europe. Neustadt is characterized by families and children, not by gangs -- despite what the graffiti might seem to signal to you. It really is the most fun neighborhood in all of Germany. It's what Berliners THINK Berlin is (hip and cool), but Berlin is really just another big city. Neustadt is a real, living community -- filled with families, hipsters, artists, business people, a genuinely diverse neighborhood that works together. You might not find MacDonalds, but in Neustadt you'll find some of the best coffee shops and restaurants in Germany.

During our recent stay in Dresden we had decided to stay at a hotel right in the center of the old town. This was a good decision but we were determined to take an afternoon to stroll through the Neustadt. We were very glad that we did. It was a nice day and the walk across the bridge and stroll down the main street of this part of the city was very pleasant. It is quite different from the Old Town.

In fact, this town probably is a much more realistic experience of how real people in Dresden actually live versus the lovely but really recreated and museum like atmosphere of the Old Town. There are charming stores and cafes in quiet residential neighborhoods. it is decided low rise and much more modern and probably Communistic influenced than the other side of the river.

No question that you will spend a lot of time in the Old Town but try to make sure that you see this part of the city to round out a full and accurate picture of Dredsen. I think you will find it a pleasant and good use of your time.

What a great area, great bars, great shops, great buildings. I'm glad this part didn't get bombed during the war.
I always wanted to visit the former East Germany since I met some people from there years ago.
I had been to Berlin and loved that and had to see Leipzig and Dresden.
Leipzig (although I liked it) is very new and didn't have the same appeal/character.
Dresden on the other hand is brilliant. Across the river in the Alstadt, you have all the fantastic buildings but the Neustadt is the place to be. Great for younger people or older ones like me!

Take the tram or walk across the bridge from The Dresden Museums into Neustadt. Interesting architechure, small shops, some antique stores on side streets, and inexpensive places to eat.
