Centerpiece of Dresden. An enormous square with great views all around and in particular the Frauenkirche. Beautiful buildings around the square. Good starting point for a walk to see old and beautiful Dresden.

The Neumarkt is probably the most important square of Dresden old town. I saw photos of what the square looked like just after the war and it was just a total ruin and pastures. It's all been rebuilt to it's pre-war look with many fine buildings such as Frauenkirche and Dresdner Philharmonie, as well as many monument to important German. Like a typical European square, there's a great many cafes restaurants and shopping.

We visited Dresden in December specifically for the Christmas markets.......this place is alive in December. We could not get enough of this square, it is modern, beautiful, classy, busy, alive and fresh and full of German hospitality. The hustle and bustle at this time of the year with all the great gifts and souvenirs and the yummy food and snacks and not forgetting the gluhwein which is most welcoming on cold frosty German days.

In this part of Germany, very few people speak English and all stores and products are in German so it is better to know a bit of German or have a translator option with you. Otherwise, quite a cool place to hang out ...

Took a seat by the Martin Luther statue on a lovely sunny evening and watched the world go by, appreciated the amazing architecture and was serenaded by 3 opera singing buskers in the square. Fabulous experience.

After 40 years of neglect during the DDR regime, this place was carefully rebuilt with both modern facades and those based on historic examples in the last 30 years. Good thing, that most traffic is banned from this place. Many tourists, few locals.

We love this large square, surrounded by restaurants and culture. The square is lined with tables, chairs and restaurants. During the day one can enjoy performers and at night one can enjoy the haunting notes of a mouth harmonica, while eating a delicious ice cream at Eiscafe Milano.
Right at the Neumarkt is the famous Frauenkirche as well as an opportunity to do some very, very serious shopping, i.e. If you are in the market for a new watch, this will be the place.

I'm sure that it is much more impressive during the Christmas Market season, but we loved the open space and enjoyed walking from end to end. There was plenty of live music happening and all of the food vendors made the air smell of yummy treats. We thought that it was a little dark in places at night, but still lovely to visit.

It's the hub of Dresden Altstadt, where many restaurants, bars, hotels and key sights are located (or nearby). it's not usually packed (like Prague would be), but there's a good number of tourists, street performers, rides (horse carriage, antique electric car, ...) and revelers until late. coming to Dresden and not seeing it would be ... crazy.
