About
Situated in the heart of the Saxon state capital, the Dresden Zwinger ranks among Germany’s most well-known Baroque buildings of Germany and is, apart from the Church of Our Lady, certainly the most famous building monument in Dresden. It accommodates internationally renowned museums and is a place for staging music and theater performances.

It's a huge building with multiply attractions. The place is a combination of a baroque palace, museums, an art gallery, a park, a terrace, with fountains, stairs sculptures.
A beautiful place to discover, learn and relax.. An absolute must see in Dresden!
Everybody seems to know that, so unfortunately in August it was full of visitors.

We visited the building complex and found countless of wonderful details as well as stellar places for photography. Would recommend to anyone coming to Dresden, especially since you can access all the outdoor areas for free. Special mention of the possibility to walk on top of the walls as from there you can see some gorgeous details of the design up close!

The palace is very beautiful, however, the garden is a construction site right now. As we arrived early in the day, it took us a while to find the stairs to the terrace (some entries are within cafe which opens at 10am). Generally, not lots of signs in the city to guide you to the places.

Our tour guide walked us through the Dresdent Zwinger, pointing out architectural details inside and outside the buildings. The history is interesting. We were most intrigued by photos he had to share that showed massive flooding in Dresdent in 2013, in which the Platz (outdoor courtyard in the center of the building) was flooded with several meters of water from the nearby Elbe River, which is way, way lower than this palace! That flood must have been as devestating to Dresdeners as the current pandemic. We visited Dresden and Germany just before Germany closed its border, returning home to Detroit on March 13, 2020.

Absolutely awesome. Actually, it was overwhelming. I wish the buildings were little cleaner. I’m sure there is a way to clean up statues and buildings without destroying the historical value. There was some construction work too. Hence, I did not get to see all the areas

I have been looking forward to seeing the Zwinger for a number of years and....not so much. Half of the complex is shut down and detoured through construction zones. The Porcelain Museum is "opened" but the porcelain is not on display; the Chinese vases are nice but can be seen in many museums. Hopefully in the future, it is opened because I am sure it is quite impressive without the fencing.

Wonderful piece of baroque architecture, although renovation is being done. Will be wonderful once interior grounds and fountains are completed. It was originally intended as a palace but is more of a enclosed pleasure grounds with different museums in the various buildings, including the Gemäldegalerie, an outstanding art museum. Wonderful place to stroll.

All of the old city is fascinating and sobering but this was my favourite site - partly as it is spectacular; partly as its still being rebuilt so the fairly recent horror is evident and sobering; and partly because it's original splendour is so OTT. The many different cherubs are great fun - especially for families...really triggering the imagination.

The well structured city with a great balance between modern and historical architecture mesmerized me. It has been home to many Saxon Kings and Prince's . The town has beautiful and huge palaces and museums. There are many one day city tours available. I decided to walk it all! Because I had just 1 day at hand , I spent my time at the iconic Zwinger palace. The lawn styling, crown architecture, many sculptures and the magnificent bell all are really worth watching. And also since this is not super commercialized yet, you may see a lot less crowd than Prague palaces. The old town has many eateries and tents on the cobbled roads that create a fun and buzzing atmosphere.

Learn about the history and understand the times! This is a fine place to walk and visit. Great architecture. The royals had it all! Thanks to the “Whit Gold” ( porcelain)

I see on their website they offer 90-min. guided tours for just a few Euros more. Is there a specific time for the guided tours?

I don't see why you would need a guided tour of the Zwinger! It was never a dwelling--it was for parties, so there are no furnishings, etc.
However, they have at least three museums in the Zwinger--the art museum is quite excellent and very crowded...the porcelain museum is good but not in a class with the porcelain museum at the Meissen museum in Meissen!...we didn't see the mathematics/physics museum.
The Zwinger is just a place to go walk around in the giant courtyard and look at the large amount of sculptures.
By the way, we visited the Green Room in 1991 when it was in the Zwinger. Since renovating the palace they have moved everything into that building and they have the "Old Green Room" and the "New Green Room."
The New Green Room is about 20 times better than the old green room. I don't know why such a big deal is made of the old green room (and you have to make reservations to visit the old green room, vs the new one). If you are short on time, be sure to see the NEW green room and skip the old green room.
ALSO, the Panometer is WILD! It is a little outside of downtown Dresden. You take a tram and transfer to a bus that drops you right in front of the Panometer. Take Binoculars. When you are on the ground level you'll think Travel-Junkie gave you a bum steer...when you get on the third level and pick your teeth up off the floor you will thank good ol' TJ-3PO! Amazing optical illusion that is almost holographic.
Hi, is this something you need to pre book?

There's a big paying parking lot less than 10 min walk from Zwinger, near the Neumarkt. It is paying in coins, so have them with you. Dresden city center is small, easy covered on foot.
