During your visit to the Hauptmarkt, I recommend taking a moment to visit this 15th Century building, the oldest such community center in Trier. Its architecture stands out from the other buildings in the marketplace. Statues of the four patron saints of Trier (James the Elder, Helena, Peter, and Paul) surround the three pointed arch arcades leading into the building. It was completely destroyed in World War II, but was rebuilt according to its original state from 1968-1970.

Right in the old town, so chances are, you’ll walk past it even if you aren’t looking for it. It’s a unique looking building. You can’t go inside unfortunately, but it’s still impressive just to see the exterior.

The Steipe dates back to the early 1400s. It gets it name from a Trier dialect word which means (arcade) supports. It was a building for ceremonial functions for the city councillors and dignitaries and contained drawing rooms and refreshment rooms.
It was destroyed during WWII and restored in 1970. You cannot go inside but seeing the outside is worth checking out.

This building, which dominates the Hauptmarkt, is not open to visits, chiefly because the ground floor and the sous-terrain contain restaurants. From the outside it is very attractive, and the visitor must be grateful that it was rebuilt in the 1960s after suffering very heavy damage during World War II.

The Steipe is the white corner building at the intersection of Fleischstr and Dietrichstr, at the end of the Hauptmarkt. It's the building with the arched arcade at ground level, 3 rows of windows and at the top a crenulated roofline. The word, "steipe" refers to those columns that support the arches. Between the arches are 4 statues of figures important to the city, namely, the three apostles - Peter, Paul, James (the older), - and Helena (Constantine's mother). They are dressed in colorful clothing of their times with the paint still vivid. Above them at the corners of the building are the 2 statues of knights that our guide drew to our attention. The knights are dressed in armor. The one with his visor up looks friendly at the market square and its townspeople. The one with his visor down faces St. Peter's Cathedral down the lane and symbolizes the conflict in authority between the city council and the Prince-Bishop of Trier. While these 2 statues appear old and sculpted from stone, they are copies of the original ones kept in the Stiftsmuseum at Porta Nigra.
The building, too, is a copy of the original one that was used as a Town Hall from late 1400s to the 1700s due to its reconstruction post WWII. The building was more of a meeting/reception hall than a Rathaus since the Archbishop of Trier wouldn't allow a Rathaus which would conflict with his authority. Presently, the ground floor has a cafe and restaurant - Zur Steipe. Its patio table umbrellas and the many tents for market stalls vie for space on the market square. All obscure the front of this building for good photos of it.
An interesting diversion in the market square to its stalls of fruits, vegetables, and flower bouquets.

With its very steep roof, crenelated roof-line and pointed-arch arcades, the Steipe is a landmark building on Trier’s main market square (‘Hauptmarkt‘ in German). Its history goes back to the 15th century but the original building was destroyed during World War II and reconstructed in 1970. The original of the statues of patron saints are to be found in the Stadtmuseum Simeonstift.
Today the Steipe houses the Toy Museum (‘Spielzeugmuseum‘ in German, entrance on Dietrichstrasse) and a café and restaurant called “Zur Steipe“ (confused by some reviewers with the Steipe itself). The location on the TA map seems to be wrong. The Steipe is not located on Simeonstrasse but at the corner of Hauptmarkt and Dietrichstrasse.

The famous old building (of course, except for the fact that it, like most of the others in Trier, was completely destroyed by the bombing during the second world war and then rebuilt according to the surviving drawings), destined originally for the municipal events – meetings and receptions, goes with its corner to the Hauptmarkt Platz and is adjacent now to another well-known mansion – Rother haus. And the first floor, which houses a coffee shop is entirely designed with open pointed arches, but they put statues of the patron saints of Trier, only from wider side facing the square. There are sculptures on the second floor, but only two knights in armour that are more suited to the toy Museum, which it houses.
The most original element that accentuates the Gothic style of building, - the "teeth" at the top.

It stood out from the rest of the buildings in the Hauptmarkt area. There are so many buildings of different designs and could possibly be a competition of architects to make it impressive or the Lords and religious leaders who commissioned them to do the best.

The Die Steipe dominates the Hauptmarkt with its very steep black roof, a very distinctive architectural roof.

Lovely Sort of Middle east Style Building that once served as the City Hall in 1300's.
It was built in 1200's. It overlooks the Christmas Market. You cannot go in but can visit the restaurant below called Rathskeller which is Ukrainian (see my review of it).It will enable you to get an idea of its composition. Looks lovely at night as complement to the Christmas decor. I found and purchased a ceramic model of this very building at the Christmas Market.
