An arch bridge with truss arches, built between 1882 and 1885. To aid with financing the construction, fees were introduced for anything crossing and until 1912. It has seen a number of changes including an expansion program in 1931 / 1934, being blown up in the war and rebuilt again from 1948 / 1950, along with further renovating works in the 1990's. When we walked over, we visited a nice restaurant for drinks, just over one side on the bank area taking in the views.

Major iron bridge over the Rhine River in Mainz. Wide, sweeping arches make this a very photogenic and aesthetic structure. The earlier bridge on the site was blown up by retreating Nazis in 1945. The bridge was rebuilt in 1948-1950.

Dendrochronological testing revealed that the wood used to build the bridge was cut in AD 27. The bridge can, therefore, not be very much younger. •
The current bridge was rebuilt 1948 - 1950 to replace the 1885 bridge destroyed by the Germans to slow the Allied pursuit in WWII. It was named for the German statesman who was the first president of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland
So it is a busy and well used bridge with a lot of history attached
Can be seen when you walk along the river

This is one of the main bridges over the Rhine River . It is an arch bridge. It avails itself to a very pleasant walk between Mainz and Wiesbaden or vice versa, a chance to see the wider views from the different perspective.

This isn’t really a sight in itself. It’s not even a particularly attractive or outstanding bridge. However it does link Mainz and Kastel-Mainz so it is a good crossing point if you are walking or cycling along the Rhine. It’s multi-laned and busy, with heavy traffic but there is a pedestrian footpath on both sides so you can cross safely and easily.
It is also one of the bridges in the Three Bridges Walk which is a 2 hour circuit. We only did do a part of it. Starting from the Mainz Hyatt Regency, we walked along the river, crossed the bridge and turned right to continue along the waterfront on the opposite side. We back-tracked, rather than continuing on.
On the Mainz side of the bridge, you’ll be walking along a wide, open paved promenade. One tip - keep an eye out for fast-moving bikes because some of them whip past you. On the other side of the river, it is a much more natural path along an unpaved flat walking trail which is mainly loose gravel or dirt. It takes you through greenery, and follows the river’s edge. We were out for a stroll so we weren’t walking quickly. The whole walk is flat and even. It would suit all walkers, including small children. There and back again took about an hour and a half.

Points of Interest:
• on the Mainz side of the bridge, look out for the State Parliament, a grand pink building
• there are lots of sculptures along the waterfront on the Mainz side
• from the Kastel side, you get a lovely view back at the skyline of Mainz
• there are beach-bars right beside the bridge in summer (the Kastel-Strand & Mainz-Strand)
• As you come off the bridge on the Kastel side, look for the castle fortress (now a museum). Opening hours are limited so if you find it open, pop in.
• ‘Baron Von Schonborn’ ship (now a restaurant) is anchored off the Kastel side of the bridge.

This bridge connects Mainz to Wiesbaden (or the other way around if you want to). On both sides there are paths for pedestrians and bicycles, actually I went for a jog and also crossed the bridge to the other side and back.

I crossed this bridge as I was walking along both sides of the Rhine, the main town side has a nicer path, and other than seeing the town from across the river and a small castle, there is not much along the other side of the river.
The bridge has some interesting architecture right as you go on or off it, but other than that it's not particularly exciting for other than convenience or to say that you crossed the Rhine.

An arch bridge over the Rhine river connecting 3 different districts, giving a pretty view of the river. Enjoyed the slow walk across the river especially with the good weather. Had fun exploring the different regions that took almost the entire day. To take note of the busy traffic on the road of the bridge and avoid dashing across for personal safety. Was a pity that we didn't manage to catch the cruise/boat to sail along Rhine as boat services only resume in May. Do check it out to avoid disappointment.
