    LARGE FORTRESS OVERLOOKING KOBLENZ
The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is located on a high hill overlooking the Rhein and Mosel Rivers in koblenz. There have been battles on the hill for 3,000 years but most of the present fortress was built in the 1800's. There are lots of exhibits and an outdoor snackbar overlooking the city.

    A tour of the fortress.
We went to the fortress after our 2-hour Rhine river cruise. We used the cable cars to get there. It’s nice to see the top view of the place, how massive it is with its thick and high walls. Definitely a lot of walking, mild if you stay on the grounds, moderate when you add climbing stairs. It was summer when we visited, so bring lots of cold water to drink throughout your trip. Some areas are still under renovations when we visited but still worth it. We spent around 2.5 hours. We have 4 teens, 3 adults and 4 seniors with us.

Go To The Top For Some Incredible Views
While the views from the ride in the cable car are quite amazing, they will be slightly better once your reach the top. We did not pay to go into the castle, but we did enjoy the free stuff as well as an ice cold beer on a hot day. These views are free, but they are also priceless of the city of Koblenz below.

Interesting and scenic fortress overlooking the Rhine and Moselle rivers
An enjoyable place to visit. Taking the gondola over the river was neat, too. The Fortress is a large structure. It has an interesting museum in it. I went there at Christmas time and it was probably more dressed than normal. It has a great view of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers and probably the highlight of a trip to Koblenz. There is also a little place to get something to eat while overlooking the rivers.

We visited here in the so called off season . No support staff around the fortress to ask for help or guidance

The map was our only help and that In Itself was poor . Audio numbers were continually advertised yet no system available thus completely left in the dark as to what we where seeing . No English translations available

Often doubling back as the layout of the place was confusing . We later found out we missed a viewing platform which would have given fabulous views across the two rivers

The advertised cafe was closed and no advance notice of this

The German war memorial was moving as a rarity in Germany

For an outstanding fortress with obvious history we left disappointed

I enjoyed the ride up with the Seilbahn (Cable car), the view was really nice. The fortress itself is massive and like a maze. Unfortunately, there is recommended route so we had to walk back and forth a bit to get a feel for it even with a map. The exhibitions were informative, but most of the things are replica. Nice but then I would expect a little more "interactive" display when only showing replica. I gave up after a while and just walked around). We had a currywurst in the cafe which was nice with an amazing view (that was well worth the visit!) and afterwards we had a Weinprobe (wine tasting) which was fun! You can choose three from five different wines for 5Euros and I would recommend you do it, it was a really nice space to sit and enjoy some regional, different wines.

We visited in July and we chocked a bit when finding the price for the entrance+cable car, so we decided to climb by foot. That was actually a great choice because that did allow us to see a couple of artefacts only visible this way. At the top, we decided to visit the inside and to be honest, that was a complete loss of time. The artefacts in the different rooms are forgettable and arranged in a incomprehensible way. There a several levels, corners, stairs and accesses, nothing is indicated properly, we lost ourselves a couple of time. The languages of explanations are completely random-sometimes you just have German, sometimes 3 langages, why? Who knows... In a nutshell: walk there, enjoy the view from the free area and go back to town ;)

This visit was a very good one since our guide was an actor who took the role of an inspector during the construction of the fortress. He was excellent and got the group involved in playing various roles. Truly a unique approach to giving a guided tour. Since our tour was scheduled for late in the afternoon, the sun went down and we were able to view the city at night from the hill. We also learned that this fortress was never used.

Koblenz and its fortress are absolutely stunning! The most impressive thing is the view of the city from above, with its beautiful old town located between the two rivers - Rhein and Mosel. I really enjoyed the cable car ride and the panorama; less remarkable are the museums and exhibitions inside the fortress. The funniest thing happened to me in the archaeological museum: the security guard told me that it was forbidden to take pictures there, so I had to delete the ones I had already taken. Of course I didn't complain; on the contrary, that made me laugh a lot!!! In Italy we have plenty of archaeological sites, museums, finds that are far better than those and that can also be photographed! I really didn't need those pictures, I even don't know why I had taken them! So I want to thank the security guard for reminding me to delete files that would only have occupied space in my hard drive. As far as the museum curators are concerned: it makes no difference to me, but please note that this is not the best thing to do if you want to promote the little you have.

The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was rather impressive. The fortress itself was an experience to walk through and the way its history and information was portrayed was informative and interesting. Plenty of events take place in this fortress throughout the year and although we visited on a regular day, we would love to return to experience the types of events that could take place here.

A very large majority of the structures are kept intact from the past, reinforced or secured for safety. I would highly recommend this place to a history buff, or someone who enjoys the atmosphere of the past. When visiting Koblenz, then it has to be a place to see at least once.

You'll need some time at this place to really explore the fortress, read the information and learn about its history. So arriving earlier in the day would allow you to really appreciate this and explore this place.

Take the cable car up, the views are wonderful! The fort is impressive! It’s very large and we did get lost looking for the bathroom. It’s not crowded with people and there’s lots of nooks and crannies to explore, especially for photographers. There’s a gift shop, food and beer available, and an art exhibition (and probably much more that we didn’t find). We went to the fortress as an add-on tour from our Viking Rhine River cruise and the tour was led by a professional interpreter and actor who had an engaging way of telling us about the fort and its history.

The cable car ride is fun. The actor who gives the tour is fun. It's certainly an unusual way to present the artifacts and history of the fortress, but it's *very* effective. If you go on your own and just wander the site, you'll get almost nothing from the trip. It's all about the stories. And who better to tell those stories than a professional trained in the business (and art) of storytelling. You get so much more when the history is told with the context and background that this tour provides.

Did it need to be an actor playing a part? Of course not. And yes, it's kind of hokey. But still, it *is* effective. And it makes what could otherwise be a dry subject into something fun and engaging.

There's a nice little food stand at the entrance to the park, and the park itself is quiet and beautiful. So relaxing.

You know ... a relaxing German fortress. These things go together like french fries and mayonnaise. :-)
