Must see if in the area
Sep 2019
We were slightly disappointed to see that the same exhibition was still being shown (the Matterhorn and mountains in general) however this time we had a guide who totally changed the visit, she was so informative and explained many things and answered lots of questions. As usual the views (weather permitting) where spectacular. Every time we visit Oberhausen we make time to visit the geometer and nearby Centro.

Excellent exhibition and clever use of Gasometer

Good views of surrounding countryside from top of Gasometer and superb view inside the Gasometer of the Matterhorn from both top and bottom. Also some excellent photography in the main exhibition.

A must see venue in the Ruhrgebiet
Jul 2019
We visit the Gasometer about eery couple of years and this has been my fourth exhibition. It never disappoints.
the quality is outstanding. This time it was the 'Der Berg ruft" Mountain is calling.
Beautiful photos and explanations on how pictures have been created. Good story telling (also in english).
Will come again!!!
An advantage is the Hochseilgarten right next door. So if you like some adventure and culture, best place to be in the Ruhrgebiet!

Cool exhibition space, currently showing Matterhorn

This is a very interesting exhibition space with rotating presentations. We were there for the Matterhorn, which included amazing photos, artifacts and models about the world's great mountains. The highlight is a model of the Matterhorn, where you lounge on cushions and see it through different lenses. An awesome way to spend a few hours learning interesting things.

Mountain photography exhibition
Oct 2018 • Family
Excellent exhibition of photographs of the worlds most famous mountains. The photos are large and capture all aspects of the beauty and terror of some mountains. Some amazing pictures of human endeavour and every day life. Interesting model upstairs. The exhibition is housed within the old gas tower which is worth visiting anyway. Go to the top for the view.

We visited the Gasometer at New Year to see the "Matterhorn" presentation - didn't know what to expect but I can only say that this is a must to visit if in the area. The Gasometer is an immense building over approximately 10 floors. The first 3 floors are filled with the most beautiful photographs with explanations of Mountains, flora and fauna very well presented and with audio tapes for non German speakers. There is a small cafe and shop on the first floor. The 10th floor is reached by a lift and opens out onto the top of the building with great views over the city. What is between the 3rd and 10th floors - a magnificent 3D view of the Matterhorn which is also reflected onto a mirrored floor. When looking up at the 3D view you are in fact looking down onto its summit, what an experience!! Be well dressed as the venue was very cold!!

A wonderful exhibition and awe inspiring space

We visited on the off chance of filling some time whilst in the city. What an amazing space and wonderfully thought out exhibition. Stunning landscape, wildlife and geological photographs, animations and film. The 3D inverted Matterhorn is a marvel and we enjoyed spending time reclining on one of the large beanbags provided, looking upwards at it and watching the seasons unfold. The inside of the gasometer is huge and lends itself brilliantly in creating the sense of vastness of the mountains
The entrance queues were long by lunchtime, so I'd recommend getting there early. We didn't take the audio guide as all the explanation boards were in English as well as German. I would definatively recommend making time to go here.

Great exhibition

We loved the exhibition "der Berg ruft". The panorama photographs are brilliant and the turned up side down sculpture of the Matterhorn is pretty crazy but awesome.
The team of the Gasometer has outdone itself again. We are looking forward to a new exhibition hopefully very soon. It would be nice if the Gasometer could stay open longer in the evenjngs.
